Finding a job is hard for obvious reasons: it’s time-consuming, it’s ridiculously competitive, and, for many of us, self-promotion isn’t one of our favorite things. But before you find the right job, sometimes it makes more sense to start with finding the right company.
One particular employer is taking out that guesswork. Ultimate Software is known for being a great place to work — and has set itself apart by ranking on countless different ‘Best Companies’ lists.

This past year alone, Ultimate Software was recognized by numerous organizations in a multitude of categories, including:

#1 on Fortune's 30 Best Workplaces in Technology list

#1 on Fortune’s 100 Best Workplaces for Millennials list

#1 on Computerworld’s Best Midsize Place to Work in IT

#1 on CIO.com’s 10 Best Places to Work for Women in Technology list

#2 on Fortune’s 100 Best Workplaces for Women list

#2 on Fortune's 50 Best Workplaces for Parents list

#3 on Fortune's Best Workplaces for Diversity list,

#7 on Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list,

and earned 100 percent on Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Sixteenth Annual Scorecard of LGBTQ Workplace Equality.

Phillipa Stephenson, Events Marketing Coordinator at Ultimate Software, says that the company’s culture “is like no other. To be excited to go to work is pretty rare for many. To love your job and team is priceless. Ultimate Software is so full of the ‘it's the little things’ experiences, that it makes the bigger picture that much more worthwhile and amazing.”
It’s clear that this company is doing a lot (perhaps all?) of the right things when it comes to fostering a supportive company culture. So we looked into what, specifically, makes Ultimate Software such an amazing workplace for so many different groups of people.
1. Committing to a people-first mission
While plenty of companies tout their commitment to making their employees happy, we know that Ultimate Software is bringing this goal to fruition by making it a business incentive. Twenty-seven years ago, the organization was founded on the belief that people matter most to the success of a business, and that focusing on recruiting and retaining good employees will lead to better results.
Tying this people-first mission to the company’s bottom line has been game-changing — and employees can attest to what this looks like and what it means to them.
“To me, ‘People First’ means putting everyone first, including our UltiPeeps, customers, and our communities,” says April Harrison, Talent Development Manager. “At Ultimate, ‘People First’ isn’t just a slogan; everyone here lives it day in and day out. Everyone at Ultimate looks out for each other and is always willing to help each other in any way.”
Talent Acquisition Specialist Haley Sasser agrees that “People First” isn’t just a sales tagline. “It’s something I get to see and experience every single day,” she says.  “It means getting little Valentine’s cards and candies from your team members or unexpectedly receiving flowers from Ultimate at your grandmother’s funeral.”
2. Offering fantastic benefits and perks
Have all of your past employers truly understood what your life looks like beyond the time you spend in the office? Probably not. That’s another area in which Ultimate Software excels: leadership understands that people have commitments and responsibilities beyond their daily job functions, and does whatever they can to help employees deliver in all aspects of their lives.
Among other benefits, Ultimate Software covers infertility treatments for employees who are trying to start a family through in vitro fertilization (IVF) — a process that can be very costly.
The company also takes some of the stress out of finding backup care for children or adults. If you’re in a pinch because your daughter’s school or daycare is closed or your son is sick, you can take advantage of the company’s subsidized backup care program, which employees can use for children or adults (if they’re taking care of a sick or injured parent or spouse) for 15 days each year.
Ultimate Software also offers employees a 401K Retirement Savings Plan with a 40% company match on every dollar of an employee’s contribution (with no limit).
3. Fostering Communities of Interest
Most of us get so caught up in our daily grind that we often don’t take advantage of our larger community of colleagues. But Ultimate Software makes it easy for employees to connect with one another on common interests and concerns, even if they don’t necessarily work closely together.
Molly Berg, who was a TechStar intern at Ultimate Software, says that bonds she forged with her colleagues were invaluable. “Over the course of my time as a TechStar intern, I found myself saying, ‘It isn’t just coming in to do a job…it’s getting to do what you love with some of the greatest people you will ever meet,’” she explains. “Ultimate creates a culture that makes us excited to be here, and to be a part of this family. I worked on projects, and had a real say in my work. It was challenging, impactful, and fun. I was constantly learning and growing and am so thankful for the entire experience."
Cayla Haney, a Core Support Specialist, agrees. “Mondays are brighter when you can call your coworkers family,” she says. “We don't just work together; we play together, too. From Nerf wars to office Olympics, we work hard, we play hard, and we support each other through everything.
Moreover, through groups like Women in Leadership, which is dedicated to helping women achieve their maximum potential; PRIDE US,  which aims to ensure LGBTQIA employees feel safe and comfortable bringing their whole selves to work; and UltiVets, a community of interest for military veterans at Ultimate; employees can collaborate with their colleagues in welcoming, inclusive environments that aren’t always easy to find in office settings.
If all this good stuff is making you jealous, channel that envious energy into something productive. Ultimate Software is looking to bring on more women, so check out their openings today!
