Anna Wintour’s Interview Outfit Advice is What I Was Taught NOT to Do — That's Why It's Genius

The only aspect of an interview that is more nerve-wracking than the fabled “what’s your biggest weakness?” is deciding what to wear. But thankfully, the Editor in Chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour has shared her advice. And I’m pretty sure we can trust her, too, since she’s, uh, the ultimate authority on fashion. 

In a recent episode of Vogue’s “Go Ask Anna” YouTube series, Anna shared what she thinks is the perfect ‘fit for any interview.

“It's so interesting to me how people dress when they come in for interviews. Sometimes you feel they're wearing clothes that they just bought that morning or maybe the night before, and not something that in any way suits their personality and who they are. I think what everyone should remember, whether they're interviewing at Vogue or indeed anywhere, that we're not hiring your wardrobe."

The main gist? You should wear something that makes you physically comfortable, but also comfortable in your own skin. She went on to explain one perfect example of a candidate who dressed for themselves… and reaped the benefits. 

“Wintour recalled one interviewee that stands out in her mind, saying, "I'll always remember a young man who came in in a dress and a handbag, and I gave him the job on the spot." She added, "You have to dress for yourself. I think it doesn't do yourself a service to fake it."

You mean to tell me that someone who makes money by telling people what to wear is telling me to just be myself? I love fashion! Now I just need to silence the voice in my head that asks whether or not it’s OK to wear red lipstick in an interview...
