Several studies have shown that overindulging in sugar can harm to your thinking capabilities and can make even recalling basic information more difficult than it should be. This can seriously hurt your productivity at work – and in every aspect of your life. Sugar addiction is a tricky thing and you could be addicted without even realizing it. Even after reading all of the scary stats about how overconsuming can be harmful or after realizing you are sugar dependent, slowing down can still prove to be extremely difficult.
But don’t give up just yet. If you shake without sugar in your morning coffee, or just crave chocolate at every point in the day, it might be time to rethink your habits. And analyzing your personality traits can help you find the best hacks to kick your cravings to the curb.

If you tend to bow out when the going gets tough, making serious lifestyle changes can feel next to impossible. To cast away the guilt that can lead to further overindulgence, give yourself a pass to eat a favorite sweet treat once a week, so you know you’ll have something to look forward to. That way, your persistence only has to last for seven days instead of for what feels like forever.
Obsessing over what other people think about you can feel like a curse. But as with many things in life, you can turn it around and use it to your advantage. If you’ve ever done something off the wall to impress someone, you can apply this method to cutting out sugar. Ask someone close to you to be your accountability partner. Keep them updated on how long you can stay without the sweet stuff. If you come to a mutual agreement to check on each other, that’s even better.
While prepping and preparing can be a pain for some people, take advantage of this talent and use it to help cut back your cravings. Instead of leaving your snack choice up to chance, carry around pre-made snacks with you that are free of processed sugar. Slice up fresh fruit or carry a bag of almonds around, so when hunger hits, you’ll be ready to handle it.
Do you wash your laundry every Thursday and call your mother every Saturday? Do you wake up to complete your projects at 7:30 AM sharp, each and every morning? If you’re a creature of habit, use this to your advantage by swapping out sugar for something better for you. Instead of reaching for a pint of ice cream when you get home, reach for a cheese stick or find a fulfilling hobby that replaces regular sugar-overloads. The key is to replace one habit with another so you don’t end up feeling off-balance.
Letting your emotions be your guide isn’t always horrible. And realizing that you’re prone to this behavior is a huge step in keeping yourself in check. If you find yourself reaching for chocolate cake after being undermined by your boss or having an argument with a friend, you can plan alternative ways to deal when something unsettles you. For example, instead of downing a sleeve of cookies, you can head to the gym to work out the stress or call someone who always makes you feel better. The key is knowing yourself so you can make kicking cravings as easy as possible.
