Lumen is an international technology and communications company that provides customers with integrated services and solutions to empower them. As part of its mission, Lumen looks to further human progress through technology and is guided by the belief that humanity is at its best when technology advances the way we live and work.

To achieve their goals, Lumen views everything they do through seven unifying principles:

  1. Fairness

  2. Honesty and integrity

  3. Commitment to excellence

  4. Positive attitude

  5. Respect

  6. Faith

  7. Perseverance

Using these principles, Lumen has successfully fostered a supportive, inclusive community where employees can grow into their best selves.  Let’s take a look at some of the ways Lumen creates a positive work environment.

A focus on diversity, inclusion, and community.

Lumen celebrates and embraces the rich mix of culture, viewpoints and backgrounds that make up its global workforce. Lumen’s ability to fulfill its purpose is dependent on the quality and capabilities of its people. Lumen’s highly competitive business requires attracting, developing, and retaining a motivated team that is inspired by leadership, engaged in meaningful work, driven by growth opportunities, and thriving in a culture that embraces diversity, inclusion and belonging.

To develop its skilled workforce in the U.S., Lumen uses candidate assessment technologies to reduce bias, employs external diversity talent sourcing strategies, ensures transparency and inclusion, and participates in diversity recruitment events, forums, and trainings.

Lumen’s Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee, composed of senior leaders and executives, including the Company’s Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, help shape, drive, and champion the overall diversity, inclusion and belonging strategy. The Company’s diversity initiatives are focused on training and education, hiring and retention, compensation, talent development, Company culture, employee engagement, and community impact.

In 2020, with 75% of Lumen employees working remotely due to COVID-19, employees actively participated in Lumen’s annual global Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging week by virtually volunteering to support 25 nonprofits globally. In one week, nearly 650 volunteer hours were completed, 2,600 pounds of food were donated, outreach was made to isolated seniors and troops serving overseas, and Lumen offered career advice to numerous job seekers with intellectual disabilities, youth, and disadvantaged women who transitioned out of work due to COVID-19. The activities deepened connections while highlighting the Company’s commitment to diversity, inclusion and belonging.

Lumen expanded the program in 2021, making it a year-long virtual volunteer campaign, giving employees plenty of opportunities to make a positive impact. A few areas of focus included economic empowerment, human rights, Black identity, LGBTQ+, women’s rights, homelessness, the environment and more. In 2021, Lumen saw a 70% increase in the number of volunteers with nearly 779 hours of volunteering which led to meaningful impact that was felt globally in nine different countries. Additionally, outcomes included contribution to 12 of the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Lumen has committed to continuing this program for employees, kicking off the 2022 campaign, by providing gratitude care kits to essential workers, teens struggling with mental health, and isolated seniors in recognition of Martin Luther King Day. This particular event in its second year, saw volunteer numbers triple with impact expanded from three states to five across the United States, including Colorado where volunteer efforts supported the front-line responders of Marshall Fire.

In 2020, Lumen awarded over 90 grants, providing over $45,000 in support to nonprofits.

Lumen also encourages employees to give back by matching donations during their annual Campaign to Fight Hunger and by providing STEM solutions for pre-K-12 schools and through other targeted giving campaigns throughout the year.
