Amira Zineb Bouafia, associate quality engineer at Alkami Technology, tells us that information technology was always her passion. Still, after graduating with a Master’s degree in Computer Science, she felt indecisive about what IT field she wanted to pursue. So, she looked to Per Scholas, which led her toward Quality Engineering.

“Before I joined Alkami, I completed a Quality Engineering Bootcamp at Per Scholas, a non-profit organization that helps individuals gain technical training for a profession in the IT industry,” she tells Fairygodboss. “They assisted me with my job search and connected me with Alkami. I was offered a full-time position as an Associate Quality Engineer in January after I completed a four-month internship with Alkami. I’ve now been with Alkami for six months total.”

In her current role, she says that she learns something new every day — as a Quality Engineer, she adds that she thrives on challenges. We caught up with her to learn more about why she chose to work with Alkami, what her day-to-day looks like, and what advice she has for other women interested in making career changes like she did.

What about Alkami stood out to you and made you want to join? What’s been your favorite aspect since joining?

When I was at Per Scholas, I was impressed with Alkami’s partnership to help Per Scholas with its mission to open doors to technology careers through free education. I fell in love with the great culture Alkami promotes. I have the best team I could ever dream of; they’re like a second family.

Tell me a bit about your first week. What kinds of things (whether formal onboarding programs or casual interactions) made you feel comfortable?

I was very excited and a little bit nervous during my first week at Alkami, but it really felt like home afterwards. Every question was welcomed; everyone is happy and supportive.

What’s the first and last thing you do at work every day?

Every morning, I get ready for work by preparing for the standup meeting. I review my completed tasks for the day before and what I have planned for the day.

What’s the most memorable piece of career advice you’ve received?

It's OK to fail sometimes. Failures are good learning opportunities that will help shape your career path.

What advice would you give to other women interested in making a major career change?

You are very strong. You will never believe what you are capable of until you challenge yourself. Sometimes it takes getting out of our comfort zone to reach our goals, but don’t hesitate to challenge yourself.
