Welcome to I Love My Job, the series where we hear from women who really love their jobs. In this edition, we sat down with Nour Salman, the Senior Manager, Domain Experts at Dataminr.
To get to where she is today, Salman made a major career leap. “I have a background in government and communications,” she tells us, “and I made the switch to tech after a 10-year career in the media industry.”
And Salman is so happy that she made this pivot and ended up at Dataminr over two years ago. “There’s never a dull moment at Dataminr,” she shares. “Our teams utilize our artificial intelligence platform in the human-AI feedback loop to assess high-impact events and risk detection. We send out critical information to our diverse client base across business and public sector organizations, as well as leading newsrooms across the globe.”
Salman finds this work incredibly rewarding. “We're making a difference to mitigate and manage crises across six continents, no matter how big or small the event,” she explains.
In the video below, Salman tells us more about why she loves working at Dataminr. We also provide lightly edited highlights from the video discussion in the following article.
The culture at Dataminir is so refreshing to see, especially because we have offices across the world. Every day, we witness continued engagement amongst our employees throughout different sectors of the organization.
One way we do that is via our 10 employee resource groups (ERGs), which include Women at Dataminir, Parents at Dataminir, Asian at Dataminir, and our latest addition, which I'm really excited about, Migrants at Dataminir.
But, what is even more reassuring is that Dataminir takes DEI really seriously. The organization has developed a DEI mission that has objectives to focus on talent, culture, and community to attain their overall mission and move business strategies forward in an ever-changing tech landscape.
My favorite thing is the people. No matter who I speak to, I always say that we have such an incredible group of individuals with an astounding wealth of knowledge and skill sets. I consider myself incredibly lucky to work with such remarkable individuals on a day-to-day basis.
There are multiple benefits that Dataminr offers employees, ranging from a personal development fund to a LinkedIn Learning program that employees can use to help build their soft and hard skills.
I also really appreciate the numerous mental health resources that Dataminr provides, including partnerships with organizations and institutions like Ginger, the Headington Institute, and Are U Okay here in Australia. These offerings allow employees to better their work-life balance and engage in personal and general mental health awareness and wellbeing practices.
One of Dataminr’s core values is to ‘Own It’. My advice to women looking to work here, but also in any workplace, is to take ownership and accountability for the work that you do and trust in yourself to engage and strive. You'll not only grow as an individual, but also contribute value to a collaborative work environment.
