Welcome to I Love My Job, the series where we hear from real women who really love their jobs. In this edition, we sat down with Yuqing Sun, VP of Digital and Data Science Product Management at Johnson & Johnson (J&J).

Sun was originally attracted to J&J 16 years ago, due to two main reasons.

  1. Compared to other more traditionally digital-native companies, J&J offered “more opportunities to apply my expertise, shape the digital journey and bring a bigger impact,” shares Sun. “As a non-digital-native company, J&J provided a green field with a tremendous amount of opportunities to apply digital and data science through reimagining healthcare to really transform the patient experience, customer experience and improve our business operations,” she explains.

  2. J&J enables employees to make a positive change by working in the healthcare industry, which touches everyone’s lives. “As the world's largest and most broadly based healthcare company, J&J’s commitment to use its scale for good, its values reflected in Our Credo and the company's mission to profoundly change the trajectory of health for humanity really resonated deeply with me,” Sun states.

In the video below, Sun shares more about why she loves working at J&J, specifically in Data Sciences, one of the many WiSTEM2D fields in the company. We also provide lightly edited highlights from this video discussion in the following article.

Tell us more about yourself and your job.

I’m an engineer and data scientist by training, and I'm passionate about driving meaningful impact through digital and data science and innovation.

I've been with J&J for more than 16 years, and my career started with a medical devices company that makes cardiovascular products. I progressed into global segment roles and enterprise supply chain roles and I’m now working with all business segments, including pharmaceuticals, medtech and consumer health.

I’ve taken roles in manufacturing and supply chain planning, business excellence, PMO, systems engineering, strategy and deployment. And, now, the enterprise digital and data science organization. Throughout all these roles, I’ve expanded my global business horizon and continued to apply data science and advanced analytics to drive business improvement.

What do you find most exciting about your work?

Leading a team and driving real impact to our customers and business by using innovative digital and data science solutions. We have the opportunity to work on a broad variety of fascinating problems, collaborate globally with colleagues in all of the business segments and functions and build best-in-class data science, AI and machine learning solutions that really turn data into insights that are integrated into our business processes to enable smarter and faster decisions.

[Our work encompasses everything from] applying IoT machine learning to our manufacturing lines to improve our product quality, to building real-time end-to-end visualization for our vaccine supply chain, to using simulation to predict the risks and disruptions from the pandemic and other global forces for our entire network. We're also using digital twin to enable our first vein-to-vein supply chain for our new personalized cancer therapy.

All these capabilities have enabled J&J to transform the ways we serve our customers and to better lead in a rapidly changing world through building resilient and agile supply chains.

How does J&J support you?

J&J provides excellent talent development opportunities and fully embraces diversity, equity and inclusion across the company. In my 16 years here, I've had the opportunity to work in multiple groups, and I've learned and grown tremendously in every role. I've also worked with leaders who believed in me, coached me and enrolled me in various impactful leadership development programs. I value the welcoming, friendly and collaborative culture here. J&J also champions and fosters the growth of women in STEM fields through its WiSTEM2D program, which is something that resonates personally with me.

I also feel supported by J&J in managing work-life balance through the remote and hybrid working arrangements and various parental support offerings. J&J also provides employee assistance programs, personal leaves to attend to family matters, time off for community work and exercise reimbursement, to just name a few other benefits.

What advice would you give to other women who are thinking about working at J&J?

First, take a moment to check out the career stories on the J&J website to get some background information on Our Credo, the J&J business and our products. Then, take some time to look for open roles that really excite you and match your passion. Once you are selected for interviews, bring your best authentic self and share your story, your experience, your passion and articulate how you will make an impact in the role.

Digital and data science is an incredibly vibrant field in J&J. If you're passionate about using digital innovation and data science to make a meaningful impact on the future of human health.

If you're looking to work in a purpose-driven company that is committed to a healthier world and empowers you to reach your full potential, then I would really encourage you to check out the many open roles in the digital space specifically at J&J!

I wish you the best of luck in finding and getting a fulfilling role at J&J. Best wishes in your STEM2D career journey!
