Welcome to I Love My Job, the series where we hear from women who really love their jobs. In this edition, we sat down with Viviana Marquez, who is a Software Engineer II, Machine Learning at Dataminr.

Marquez moved to New York to join the company in February 2022 — and she hasn’t looked back since. “I'm loving it,” she tells us. “My journey at Dataminr has been very special to me because I come from a background in data science, but now, as a software engineer, I've been learning a lot. It's been a journey full of challenges and exciting discoveries.”

This journey is aided by Marquez’s love of the Dataminr product and how she truly believes in it. “I'm a curious person,” she tells us. “I love being the first one to find out about things — and that's exactly what Dataminr does by using the power of AI. So, as someone that works in tech, I truly appreciate the value that Dataminr has given to its users.”

In the video below, Marquez tells us more about why she loves working at Dataminr. We also provide lightly edited highlights from the video discussion in the following article.

What do you find most exciting about your work?

I work for a team called Team X. When I was interviewing at Dataminr, I found just the name of the team exciting!

And now that I'm in the team, what I enjoy most about working here is that we work on different prototypes and proofs of concepts. So, there's a lot of room for creativity and it's okay to fail or succeed in the name of innovation

How would you describe the culture at Dataminr?

I would describe the culture of Dataminr as a friendly and diverse one. One specific example is that through our communication channel, we get randomly matched with someone in the company to learn more about them and their roles. Through this activity, I’ve met so many people in different areas, different countries, different time zones, different roles, and also different life journeys…

It’s a heterogeneous company where you can discover so many things and everybody's always so excited to connect and learn from each other.

How do you feel supported by Dataminr?

Dataminr offers me a lot of resources for both my professional and personal development. I'm especially grateful for the professional development and educational budget that we are offered every year to attend either a course or a conference of our choice. I'm also grateful for the generous PTO and work flexibility that the company offers, which, for me, translates into an excellent work-life balance.

Something else that I also really like about Dataminr is that they actually care. They take into account the feedback that the employees give to the company and put it into action.

What advice do you have for other women looking to work at Dataminr?

I'm a Latina woman in tech. So, my advice for women, Latinos, or anybody that wants to work at Dataminr is to be genuinely excited about the company, to believe in the product, and to appreciate the value that it provides to its users
