When Caren Condiff talks to top talent about her six years at American Airlines, the first thing she tells them is that the company is like a family. With a wealth of employee business resource groups, programs focused on personal development and a company culture that encourages you to actually take your vacation time, American Airlines is a supportive workplace that certainly feels like home to the women Condiff recruits.

So, how can you land a job at a company like American? We talked to Condiff about her top tips for job seekers, how she made it to her current role and what makes American Airlines a special place to work. She also shared how employee resource groups at American are making the airline’s workforce more dynamic than ever.

How long have you been in your current role, and what were you doing previously?

I have been a Senior Talent Advisor for just over six years (three years as a contractor and three years as a full-time team member). Prior to this role, I was a Recruiting Coordinator for a medical technology company supporting seven recruiters and six account managers.

As a recruiter, what are three things about your company that you always make sure to highlight when talking to a candidate?

Number one: once you join American, you are part of a family. Two, that we encourage everyone to leverage your flight benefits and take vacation time and three, we encourage personal growth, learning and development.

What’s one thing your company does that you think is particularly unique or unexpected?

American has 130,000 team members globally. Being the world’s largest airline and a 24/7 operation, the opportunities are endless. I’m always being challenged and learning something new.

As you grow within the company, you also have the ability to move jobs internally and have a completely new experience. I know team members that began their career with us at the airport and now have a professional role at headquarters.

Tell me a bit about your company’s D&I efforts and/or employee resource groups.

Inclusion and diversity are the foundation of the dynamic workforce at American Airlines, and we focus on making our culture a competitive advantage. If we take care of each other, it’s easier for everyone to take care of our customers.

There are a wide range of employee business resource groups (based on culture and ethnicity, generation, faith, veteranship, abilities and many more identifiers) available to all our team members. Each group provides us an opportunity to explore, learn and celebrate our differences and similarities. In October, our Indian Employee Business Resource Group hosted a Diwali Festival of Lights celebration here at our new campus, which had a fantastic turnout.

What’s your #1 piece of advice for women who are looking for jobs right now?

Don’t be afraid to sell yourself!! Make sure your resume really highlights ALL of the relevant skills and experience that you bring to the table.
