As recruiting top talent becomes more competitive, many companies strive to stand out from the pack by offering trendy perks, like rec rooms with ping-pong tables, “glamping” retreats and office snacks. But fridges full of seltzer water can only get companies so far if they aren’t also offering the all-in benefits that support employees in every stage of their lives, at work and at home.

Luckily for the folks working at United Technologies Corporation — ranked by FGB’ers as a top 10 company for women in 2018 — their employer’s approach to benefits is one that’s truly holistic.

What, exactly, do some of these game-changing benefits look like? Check out seven of our favorites below.

1. Domestic Partner Benefits

Partners of employees — regardless of gender — are eligible for coverage under UTC’s medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, in addition to Critical Illness and Accident Insurance. Inclusively supporting all families is key for UTC, and starting in 2019, partners and their children will be eligible for comprehensive insurance coverage.

2. Parental Leave

UTC offers employees eight weeks of paid birth/adoption leave and four weeks of paid parental leave. Women who work here have glowing things to say about what the parental policies look like in practice, too. As Keri Lata, an HR Generalist at UTC’s Pratt & Whitney, said, “The parental leave policy gave me the opportunity to spend additional quality time at home after the birth of our son. I’m grateful for every moment. Having the support of the company and my colleagues made returning to work after my leave an easier transition... and I’m happy to work for a company that values family just as much as I do.”

3. Dependent Care

A Dependent Care Spending Account (DCSA) allows UTC employees to save on dependent care, reimbursing them on a pre-tax basis for expenses like senior care services, babysitting, sick child care, and before-and-after-school programs.

 4. Flexible Work Arrangements

One of the company’s most beloved benefits, employees have the ability to create individualized flexible working arrangements — from part-time work and job sharing to telecommuting and compressed workweeks — with their supervisors through UTfleX.

“As the spouse of a U.S. Air Force service member, UTflex enabled me to continue in my role with Pratt & Whitney while my husband continues to serve our country, with an added bonus of being able to live together,” Global Immigration team member Kyle D’Souza said. “UTfleX made me realize that Pratt & Whitney/UTC cared about my family’s unique situation.”

 5. Lifelong Learning

UTC seeks people with aspirations to learn, grow and be challenged – so lifelong learning is a major priority. The company is focused on developing skills for today and tomorrow through a series of innovative programs. That’s why UTC has invested more than $1.2 billion in its Employee Scholar Program, which covers the cost of tuition, academic fees, and books at approved educational institutions. The company doesn’t stop there, however; it also pays for ongoing digital training and certificate programs to help employees stay on the cutting edge of technology.

6. Beacon Health Options

In keeping with its emphasis on improving employees’ lives holistically, UTC partners with Beacon Health Options to offer a comprehensive employee assistance program. With information and resources covering everything from mental health services to choosing between child care and getting legal advice, the partnership aims to ensure employees are getting the support they need in every facet of their lives.

 7. Doctors on Demand (DoD)

Thanks to a handy-dandy app users can input their symptoms and be digitally connected to doctors with ease. Available 24/7, the service also allows employees to make appointments with psychologists, emphasizing the company’s focus on holistic well-being yet again. Better yet, any associated service costs through DoD apply to plan deductibles and are less costly than an office visit, making this service a saver of time and money.
