They’re Back! ISO New England Interns Welcomed to Campus

When this year’s class of 27 interns arrived for orientation on June 6, it marked the return of the program to the ISO New England campus for the first time since 2019. For the past two summers, the ISO’s interns have worked remotely, just like the majority of its workforce.

Angela Gaspar, the ISO’s University Relations Specialist, is happy to have them back.

“Being on campus offers additional dimensions that are especially important for students gaining early professional experience,” Angela said. “There’s more opportunity for informal learning and development when our interns are on campus with our employees.”

The ISO’s summer internship program offers undergraduate and graduate students real-world work experience and networking opportunities. Each summer, interns use their knowledge about science, technology, engineering, and math to complete valuable projects relevant to the electric power industry. At the end of the summer, they present their work to ISO New England’s senior executives.

In addition, field trips offer the interns an opportunity to see different elements of the power system and industry in action. This summer, they’ll be visiting the central power plant at UMass-Amherst, MA, the Electric Power Research Institute in Lenox, MA, and the Lempster Wind Farm in Lempster, NH.

ISO New England recruits and fosters a diverse and inclusive workforce. Leveraging the diverse backgrounds, identities, and experiences of its employees is integral to ISO New England’s success and exists throughout the workplace, including the ISO’s intern program. This year’s intern group consists of 35% females, with 86% of those females pursuing a STEM degree.
