Bristol Myers Squibb is a global biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing and delivering innovative medicines for patients with serious diseases — and their medicines help millions of patients globally. Their ability to transform patients’ lives is achievable only through the talent and passion of their over 30,000 employees, who all bring unique skills, insights and passions to the work they do for patients every day.

To enable their employees to bring innovative medicines to their global patients, Bristol Myers Squibb makes supporting their employees and growing a diverse workforce a top priority. This includes advancing and protecting the health, safety, professional development, work-life balance and equitable treatment of their employees, as well as ensuring that all employees have opportunities for development and advancement. The company also offers competitive benefits (such as competitive parental leave, flexible working and care-taking benefits) that help support employees.

100% of FGB’ers believe that the Bristol Myers Squibb CEO supports gender diversity.

In this article, we explore how Bristol Myers Squibb is achieving their DE&I goals, helping the world around them and supporting their employees.

Viewing diversity and inclusion as indispensable priorities.

Through their culture of inclusion, Bristol Myers Squibb states that they “create an agile and responsive work environment where the diverse experiences and perspectives of all our employees help to drive innovation and transformative business results.” Their global diversity and inclusion strategy is connected to their business strategy and involves both long-term investments and continuous commitment from leadership and employees.

To help meet this commitment, the Bristol Myers Squibb People & Business Resource Groups (PBRGs) provide proactive opportunities to support business priorities, foster employee engagement and shape a culture of inclusion. Coordinated by the company’s Global Diversity and Inclusion Center of Excellence, their workforce can connect, learn and contribute to one or more PBRGs. PBRG membership has grown to over 12,500 members across 104 chapters in 43 countries since inception.

The PBRG model is unique — it was created from internal data that showed that traditional employee resource groups needed to be transformed to enhance inclusion and employee engagement — and broadly viewed as a best-in-class model, with each PBRG having a dedicated full-time leader, leadership team accountability and a multi-year business plan. At Bristol Myers Squibb, PBRGs are viewed as the cultural cornerstone of their organization.

The current PBRGs are the:

  • Black Organization for Leadership and Development (BOLD)

  • Bristol Myers Squibb Network of Women (B-NOW)

  • Cultivating Leadership and Innovation for Millennials and Beyond (CLIMB)

  • Differently-Abled Workplace Network (DAWN)

  • Organization for Latino Achievement (OLA)

  • Pan Asian Network (PAN)

  • PRIDE Alliance

  • Veterans Community Network (VCN)

Helping the world and the communities they serve.

Through the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation, the company promotes health equity and seeks to improve the health outcomes of populations disproportionately affected by serious diseases and conditions. As a result of their work, the foundation hopes to give new hope to some of the world’s most vulnerable people.

And, in August 2020, Bristol Myers Squibb and the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation made five commitments to help address disparities in healthcare, increase diversity in clinical trials, expand the supply chain to include more diverse suppliers, enhance their employees’ ability to give back to the community and increase the diversity of their workforce.

These commitments have led to tangible progress in 2021, a few of which are:

  • Launch of the Tomorrow's Innovators initiative, which, in partnership with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), is helping to build a sustainable bridge for diverse talent to the biopharma industry.

    • “Every idea, experience and background has a place at BMS, and I'm excited to give a new generation of leaders a seat at the table.” — Chris Boerner, EVP, Chief Commercialization Officer discussing Tomorrow’s Innovators

  • Awarding $11.1 million in Corporate Giving grants to 56 U.S. non-profit organizations to improve access to high-quality care, disease awareness and education for medically underserved communities.

  • Setting a goal to spend $1 billion with diverse suppliers around the world over the next five years that will help expand capacity in diverse businesses, create jobs, lift communities and drive supply chain innovation.

  • Increasing diversity in clinical trials in the near term by locating 25% of U.S. clinical trial research sites in highly diverse communities by 2022. The Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation also opened applications for its Diversity in Clinical Trials Career Development Program.

  • Expand our robust employee giving program to provide a 2-to-1 match for employee donations to social justice organizations fighting disparities and discrimination for a two-to-one donation match identified by our PBRGs.

Bristol Myers Squibb is clearly committed to acting on their values and truly making a difference in the lives of their employees and patients around the world. Are you interested in helping them achieve their mission? They’re hiring! Find open positions via the following link.
