Natasha Kapoor — Team Leader, Technology at Quicken Loans — has learned the delicate balance many women are looking for. She’s mastered climbing the career ladder in the male-dominated tech field while still having time to dedicate to her family life (and watching Game of Thrones). How’d she achieve this success? She credits Quicken Loans’ flexibility and care for its employee’s development, along with some good advice she’s gotten along the way.

We talked to Kapoor about work-life balance, leading a successful team and the key to clear communication. Then, Kapoor shared her best advice for working moms heading into a stressful interview.

How long have you been in your current role, and what were you doing previously?

I’ve been in my role for 5 years, and I was a Business Analyst prior to this role.

What’s the first (and/or last) thing you do at work every day?

The first thing I do at work every day is make a to-do list of the things that I need to accomplish. The last thing I do is check my schedule for the next day so I’m prepared for projects and meetings.

What’s the most unique or interesting aspect of your job or company?

The most unique aspect about Quicken Loans is that I get to decide how to solve a problem, and my voice matters.

What’s something you think most people (perhaps even current employees) don’t know about your company that you think they should?

Something that most people don’t know about Quicken Loans is that you have the power to direct your career, and they give you the opportunity to work on things that you love.

What’s something you’re especially good at at work?

One thing that I’m especially good at in my role is delivering projects on time.

What about outside of work?

Outside of work, I’m good at raising a family.

What are you trying to improve on?

I’m trying to focus more on how to make strategic changes to better our teams rather than working on day-to-day things.

What’s your favorite mistake?

Assuming that a message sent is a message received. Now, I make sure that my communication was actually translated the way I intended it to be.

What’s the one career move you’ve made that you’re most proud of?

The one career move I’m most proud of is stepping into leadership because I love mentoring team members. Seeing them grow and succeed makes me extremely proud.

What do you love most about your job or your company?

The thing I love most is the flexibility — I can focus both on my family and my work when needed.

What are you currently reading/watching/listening to?

I’m late to the party, but I just started watching Game of Thrones.

What’s your #1 piece of advice for women who are looking for jobs right now?

My advice for women who are looking for jobs right now is to be confident and don’t feel guilty for being a working mom.

Who is the most influential person in your life and why?

The most influential person in my life is my mother. She raised us to be confident and empowered despite not having the best circumstances.

What’s the most memorable piece of career advice you’ve received?

The most memorable piece of career advice I’ve received was to let go of perfection.

What was the best quality of the best boss you’ve ever had?

The best quality of the best boss I’ve ever had was that this boss didn’t find solutions for me but helped me find answers for myself.
