"The company has an excellent internal program to tackle gender inequality from both the bottom up and the top down, so it is saying the right things. It has excellent maternity and paternity leave policies. Pay, bonuses, and benefits tend to be good. The work is interesting and definitely abundant, which can sometimes lead to long hours but exposes people to a lot of good experience. Some women are groomed for advancement or hired into significant middle leadership positions, but once at a certain level, there is a discouraging pattern of their being headhunted away to or seeking, and getting, good jobs at other companies. I think the company would benefit from looking into the reasons for this and trying to rectify it, to improve the gender balance at higher levels through internal promotions. Also, the company has the tendency to shutter sites and move work to other ones, which has the effect of shedding workers who are less able to relocate, typically older workers; thus a subtle inclination toward younger workers, whether or not this is intentional. I would recommend it as a good place to work and get interesting experience, but perhaps not count on being at the company long-term."

"Many women are in leadership positions at BMS. Many women with promise are groomed for leadership positions by both male and female directors. There is both maternity leave and paternity leave, and women tend to come back after maternity leave instead of deciding to stay home. Pay and bonuses are good. That said, there is always a large amount of work to be done, leading to very packed days or long hours or both. Managers tend to be very flexible to allow for family commitments, but still expect the work to get done."

"Many women are in leadership positions. There are transparent processes for status reports and promotions. The person who has the best solutions is valued over the person with the loudest voice. The work environment is very family-friendly, flexible hours, daycare, etc. That being said, it is engineering, so expect a male-dominated environment. One weird impact of being an engineering company is that the women scientists all dress frumpy and conservative, due to strict lab-safety policies, but the women administrators can wear skirts, pumps, and sleeveless tops."

"I've worked here for 10 years. I work in a support function that is mostly women on matrix teams that are mostly men. The company is trying hard to figure out why there are fewer women in senior ranks, so there is openness to change and improvement. We always rank well in work/life balance rankings and working mother listings. The on site day care here is equalled by none. I was helped by both of those earlier in my career. It gets harder, the higher you get in the company."

"I have worked for BMS for 23 years. Benefits are good, not a good company for women or those without a PhD. Raises are minimum, promotions few and far between."
