November 2017

Maternity leave is poor for a company that earns as much as it does. Only a ratio of only 1:12 female partners in senior management investment team. One female in the level below Partner. Flexible working is poor.

It's great if you don't have kids. If you have kids and want to advance, you'll have to sacrifice your free time and/or time with kids.

The challenge with tenure is that it gives professors the right to do almost anything they please without the possibility of firing (unless it's illegal). It also gives them the power to stay in the job for an eternity. Beware of working for professors; the culture of Universities can be very misogynistic and the professors have a certain immunity in perpetuating that.

May 2016

It's a different environment for women here than men. Leadership is all old boys-types, even the couple of women who are in charge follow bully-type ways of managing and talk down to women.

Be respectful of their employees, especially of those not on the engineering team. Employ leaders who can actually manage instead of those who just have an ego and bullying approach to leadership.

October 2015

Very few women in upper management, but overall a fairly equal gender distribution. This is however a problem that should be addressed (getting more women into leadership roles) as the company continues to grow. Company is very supportive of flexible work schedules, with some departments having explicit "work from home" days. I was able to work a reduced schedule after maternity leave and keep my health benefits (min 20 hours for health benefits). The maternity leave policy also includes a disability policy that pays 60% of your salary for 5 weeks. This is worse than most companies in this industry, but sadly pretty good for the US. Many of the social activities involve alcohol (e.g. holiday party is usually at a whiskey bar with an open bar), and there is a beer fridge and regular ping pong at the office creating a bit of a frat boy atmosphere at times. Though some would call that a cool startup environment, it can be annoying or even alienating if you are pregnant or just don't like to drink with work people. Overall great people to work with and the flexibility of work place and time is especially great for people with young kids.

They will ask you to cut your pay rate or won't pay travel expenses if they don't have enough people registered. You CAN decline the class in this case, but that means no work... You're on your own when you're teaching, which for me is ok. Sometimes they confirm the class very late and can't get the materials sent to the site in time. This means running to a print shop and having the materials printed, bound etc.; they do reimburse for the materials, but not your time and trouble of doing this.
