What I've seen is who you work for can make a huge difference in promotions, time off, and flexibility. It shouldn't be that way but there are still a lot of managers here who believe that they need to make everyone come into the office everyday, no trust in otherwords, and managers swing from promoting no one to promoting everyone or trying to help them get to the next level, to those in the middle. So, having said that, it's probably like every other major industrial company.

there was no paternity leave offered when i had kids. Also, we did not have permissive leave which might have allowed more time that was paid.

A lot of men in the company have the perception that the women who do get promoted are not the most qualified, but are promoted to hit a diversity metric

Hard work pays off. Not only with opportunities but also flexibility with schedule. If you can perform and excel, managers allow a lot of flexibility.
