I report to women all the way up to the VP level. There is good flexibility, and real understanding that maternity leave happens and then life goes on.

There is a frat bro-mance sort of culture that discourages genuine academic research or professional skill development.

TransCanada truly seems to value having women in positions of authority. There are several senior women I see as mentors for my career progression. My boss is female, and her boss, and her boss.

Keep in mind that it is a family company, and even though they are great, who you are related to counts for them.

June 2017

This is a reasonably fine employer. There is not an overt culture of exism at all. However, many women have recently left or were laid off due to extenuating business circumstances. There is no maternity leave. The conference rooms are named after Star Wars references. There are many promises to gender/underrepresented minorities but little action. No parental leave. Hard to find mentorship. Lots of cross-coastal "facetime" so depending on your position it might not be best for working from home or creating truly flexible schedules. However, most people WANT to be good and if you are coming from a toxic env, that may be enough.

Again, it depends on whether they would be client facing or an internal employee. Big difference in terms of flexibility, work-life balance, and culture.

You really need to take advantage of being a woman, take off for your period. Even if you try to be tough and one of the guys you'll be expected to work harder and longer but with no greater chance of higher pay or promotion.
