I think there is a stigma around flexible work schedules, especially for women. I don't think you should feel lucky for flexibility, I think it should be given.

  • Took Maternity Leave Here? (Weeks)

    6 paid / unpaid

My maternity leave was 6 weeks paid via short-term disability (FMLA) and then I took an additional 6 weeks paid vacation time.

  • Recommend to Women?

Maybe. I can only speak for my department, not the entire hospital which has 20k employees. My department has more women then men. However, the head of my department, the second and third highest roles, and a large percentage of the faculty are all men. Senior management and support staff are overwhelmingly female. I think there is support for women, I think there is support for flexible schedules for parents, and maternity leave. But those are limited by the center, at-large. I think faculty positions (MDs, PhDs) are given a lot more flexibility then any management or support staff positions. It is my opinion that this is true for pay, negotiating rights, promotions and time off.

MSK is a wonderful place to work. I'm porud to say I am part of an organization that really makes a difference in the world. The people I work with are great and I love to come to work each day. It's rare that you can say I love my job and I am fortunate to say that I do and there are many employees here that feel the same way.

I spend 3 hours a day commuting to MSK, but it is worth it. As a Mom of young kids, I have the flexibilty to work from home when needed, leave early, shift my schedule to accomodate kids events at school, etc. While not everyone has this luxury, I do not take it for granted. Maternity leave- depending on the level of your position, you can receive 100% of your salary while on disability, and then utilize PTO for the rest of your leave. My 12 weeks was completely covered at 100% of my salary. However, lower level and some hourly positions are not extended the same benefit so this is not true for all MSK employees.

There is no paid maternity leave from the institution. The hospital does value people who work more than required hours in administration.

When you start working at MSK its like joining a new family. Everything we do here is with the patient in mind. Management treats employees they way they themselves would like to be treated. Many leadership positions in both the clinical and financial/IT world are held by women. Women's views are respected and our voices are heard at all levels. Its an honor and a pleasure to work here.

My job is very accommodating to working mothers. I often need to attend school functions during the work day and my boss never gives me a problem. I don't take advantage of this flexibility, I often will come in early or stay later, do work at home, to make up for my time.
