"It depends on which local office you work for. It’s a very old company with old norms (women were always working in admin positions, men were reps overwhelmingly) but NM were making efforts to make more diverse hires. Benefits weren’t great because even though you worked for a huge company, if you worked in a field office it’s like working for a small family company. "

"Northwestern Mutual is an incredible place to work! The flexibility and work-life balance is a huge plus for a working mom like myself. As a new employee, everyone has been very welcoming and helpful. I'm so impressed with the D&I strategies the company has in place and the way NM is helping all of the communities they are in. "
"There is a huge need for women to become financial advisor's in the world we live in today- in 4/10 households women are the breadwinners and only 16% of the Financial advising force on women. Women need an advisor who can relate with them and understand their needs. I would encourage more women to look at the industry and understand the NM is leading the way in creating an inclusive culture that promotes work-life harmony. "
"Absolutely one of the best places to start your career!"
"The NM culture is amazing for women who want to have a successful career and family. "
"The job allows me the opportunity to provide for my family on my own schedule. The culture is very supportive and understanding or having a family and outside responsibilities. As a woman this job allows you to relate and connect with people on so many levels. There are not enough women doing this job, so it is a growing industry for women!"

"We are still on our D&I journey as a company, we need to speak up to our leadership team to help them understand our needs."
"Northwestern Mutual is a place that truly embraces and develops each person on an individual basis. I have been here for 5 years and have felt very supported in a variety of management roles and now as a Financial Advisor. This company has seen me through getting married, losing parents, having kids, and many other life changes. I feel like I have a team of people who inspire me, build my confidence, and are open and flexible in working with me and my evolving life. It is a phenomenal culture and place to work. "
"This job has allowed me to create a life where I can be present for my kids as a single mom and also be building a career that has no ceiling. There is still work to be done to have women be equals in the financial industry, but I love getting to change the landscape of what it looks like, and am grateful every day for the strong women around me. We need more!"

"multi cultural company and diverse and inclusive culture for employees"
"The industry is male dominated, especially the sales roles. The sales role has a lot of individual milestones and accomplishments. Each advisors is primarily responsible for their own business. This can make it feel like there isn't a collaborative supportive work space. Once someone shows promise they will be tapped on the shoulder for leadership opportunities and recognition. There is structured mentorship if paired with a good mentor women would enjoy working here. Because there are more men in the industry mentors are often men who do not experience the challenges women might face. What I appreciate the most is that the company is making an effort to recruit and grow women advisors. There is a strong commitment to making the workplace inclusive, offices are recognized and supported for their efforts in growing women advisors and it has stayed in the forefront of the company for a number of years. "
"Sill majority male but they are trying to make a change"
"The company has developed incredible resources to help promote the success of women. They have done a great job of being the champion for change in the financial services industry. I have worked here for 6 years and cannot imagine another company like it. "
"Working at Northwestern Mutual has allowed me to grow in so many ways. Not only am I supported and developed to become my best self, but I am surrounded by great people and a great work environment. I truly can say I enjoy coming into work everyday, and I feel valued in my workplace. "
"This career opportunity has changed my life. I am able to make a huge impact with my work, while providing an amazing lifestyle for my family. The flexibility allows me to be on field trips and attend class parties with my children. "
"The Boston & Woburn office is extremely inclusive and supportive of women. There is constant promotion and elevation of successful women in the industry. Its an empowering place to work that also helps you find your own personal work-life balance. I feel like an equal and have endless roads of opportunity ahead. Come join us! "
"Prepare to commit to yourself for five years; prepare to sacrifice time. Set up a support system--ask your partner/family/posse to help you (Actively! Not just cheer you on!) Don't let having a child be the reason for not succeeding--make him/her the WHY you are succeeding. (That's going to require creativity.) NM is only now learning to support women. But that doesn't mean it discriminates. NM will flex for you if you commit to bringing the goods in your efforts to learn, credential, and produce."
"I love so many things about working at NM. I have the flexibility to run my schedule and be present where I want to be present and I can earn as big of an income as I want. I’m intellectually stimulated and constantly growing. Our work culture is amazing and incredibly supportive. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. "
"Being a financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual has been a life changing career choice."
"I love working at Northhwestern Mutual. Great culture, people and tremendous amount of support. I love to have flexibility in my hours and ability to be a good mom and great career women. "
"Impacting real lives while living my own #reallife and being my #authenticself"

"The job is hard and it's so much harder as a female. If you have a good support system and can be okay with not being perfect (or get over it as quickly as possible), you can do very well here."

"The sales contest rewards are predominately male oriented. The national company is making management aware of changes needed in order to recruit and retain women."

"They promote women within to leadership opportunities and also provide a lot of support for women throughout the company. Very male dominant from years past, but the women across the country are incredibly talented and it is a great network to work with."

"overall it's a good company but depending on your style of learning and family/work balance it may not be the right fit. Over the past 5 years the company has slowly moved into lean management (metrics vs personal). When interviewing be upfront with what you need and ask those difficult questions so you are not surprised. "
"There are not many females in the financial representative role. You have to be a strong, determined person to work in the career. You make your own hours/ schedule, it is commission level which is great because there is not ceiling how much you can make. Great company to work with."
