Field Application Engineer

As the Field Application Engineer (FAE) for the Electrification business of ABB you will be the technical lead at consulting engineer, end user, EPC and design build customers, ensuring ABB products and solutions achieve a preferred/ acceptable manufacturer status in project specifications. The Field Application Engineer will be tightly integrated with the local sales team and must have proficiency applying MV/LV switchgear, switchboards, panelboards, transformers and arc flash mitigation technologies in markets such as healthcare, data center, industrial, utility and commercial construction.

Your responsibilities

• Collaborate with consultant, end user and EPC customers to define electrical project needs, supply design assistance, product selection, value engineering, budgeting & provide education on ABB solutions to gain acceptance of the same into project specifications.
• Review and evaluate job specifications and end-user customer requirements and provide electrical solutions including one-line electrical diagrams, schematic diagrams, lay-out & equipment drawings, equipment specifications and project budget pricing for Low and medium voltage applications
• Accountable for developing accurate estimates of the electrical budget plan for designers, and incorporating best practices
• Be the local product expert in the following products and applications: MV/ LV switchgear, switchboards, panelboards, transformers, motor control, power monitoring, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), automatic transfer switches (ATS), paralleling switchgear (PSG), generator circuit breakers and others.
• Have a working knowledge of short circuit, coordination and arc flash mitigation concepts and the ability to illustrate their benefit via tools such as SKM or Easy Power.
• Participate in and develop papers for IEEE and other industry events/ conferences to raise awareness of ABB solutions.
• Prepare project analysis information such as; technical, commercial, risk assessment and financials for discussion with commercial leadership.

Your background

• B.S. degree in engineering; preferably electrical
• Minimum 6 years experience in the electrical distribution industry
• OR a Master’s degree with 4 years of experience
• Fluent in English; speaking and writing
• Enjoy problem solving and new customer development
• Self-starter; accountable for results and able to work without detailed direction
• PE certification is a plus
• Previous field, plant or design engineering in electrical power systems at major oil and gas companies, electric utilities or industrial facilities preferred
• Knowledge of industry codes and standards; ANSI, IEEE, NEC, NEMA, NFPA 70E, UL
• 25% travel to customers in local area regularly
• Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
