The ABB Research Center in Raleigh, NC is developing the foundation for future generations of ABB products. As a Multiphysics Research and development (R&D) Intern, you will work in dynamic, international teams comprised of people with a wide range of experience and competencies to develop technology and innovation for ABB’s Motion and Electrification Business Areas. In this position, you will conduct hands on research, simulate physical behavior, analyze novel manufacturing and control methods, and experiment with prototype implementation in ABB applications.

Your responsibilities

• Supporting ABB R&D projects and investigations
• Finding and evaluating state-of-the art technology from public sources
• Contributing and critiquing new ideas, features, solutions, and evaluation strategies
• Helping design, draw, and model new components and test set-ups
• Helping design, run, and document calculations, simulations, laboratory tests, and experiments

Your background

• Must be pursuing a master’s degree or PhD, preferably in electrical engineering or closely related field
• Specialization in Electric Machine design and/or control preferred
• Power electronics hardware and control interest and experience also beneficial
• Experience with Finite Element modeling and hardware testing preferred
• Determination, curiosity, and communication are keys to success at this R&D position
• Currently enrolled in a degree program in the US
• Must be currently authorized to work for ABB in the US
