R&D Engineer

As an R&D Engineer on the Power Protection team, you will be responsible for creating and evaluating the design of equipment, systems or installations, including specifications for manufacturing, fabrication or construction. This position supports ABB’s Electrification Smart Power Division in Richmond, Virginia, In this role, you will utilize your extensive skills and technical expertise to generate mechanical design project requirements, design and test to meet those requirements, document your design, and participate in cost reduction and coordination with other technical teams within our Power Protection business.

Your responsibilities

  • Contribute to the mechanical design deliverables (design and documentation) required for the development of new or enhanced models of power protection equipment.
  • Work with others cross-functionally to deliver designs in a timely manner with high-quality deliverables that meet customer expectations and project requirements.
  • Contribute to design reviews and verification following the established design review process, providing feedback on designs and making modifications.
  • Design and release mechanical prototypes, support the fabrication of those prototypes, and lead the improvement process following prototype fabrication.
  • Lead product design improvement opportunities to reduce product cost.
  • Provide support in converting conceptual designs into engineering documentation and maintaining existing products.
  • Work with all areas of the business (production, supply chain, service, etc.) to ensure products being developed or enhanced meet the needs of the entire business.

Your background

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from ABET accredited university with 2+ years of experience required.
  • Knowledge of solid modeling CAD design software (Solidworks, etc.) required.
  • Collaborative, solution-focused approach and strong written and spoken communication skills.
  • Experienced in thermal and structural evaluation, and PLM software a plus.
  • Experience interpreting and applying electrical safety standards (UL/IEC, etc.) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of sheet metal design, detail part drawings, assembly drawings, and design for manufacturing in all the above.
  • Project Management experience with hands on experience in manufacturing environment is a plus.
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US.
