    Your responsibilities

    • Technical/scientific proficiency: Demonstrates solid competence in technologies, tools and methods in own specialist area through solving complex industrial problems, working independently and with ability to guide and mentor junior team members
    • Works within relevant parts of the R&D/Product engineering organization as an acknowledged expert in research / development field
    • Maintains recognized expertise in specific area by integrating the latest developments in technologies, tools and methodologies into own work
    • Technology direction and customer centricity: Demonstrates a solid understanding of the key drivers for ABB, as well as state of the art technologies, tools, and methods in own business/technology area as well as of associated ABB products and offerings
    • Remains aware of the current and planned R&D activities in own area. Understands the customer and business value of what they are delivering along with the overall offering
    • Innovation and creativity: Leverages expertise in own technical area to contribute innovative and creative ideas to a variety of complex R&D assignments
    • Finds new ways of solving problems by following own ideas, creating hypotheses and defining ways to validate them
    • Identifies opportunities and proposes R&D activities accordingly
    • Projects, processes and tools: Acts as project leader or senior project member providing experience in the execution and use of supporting tools, processes and methods
    • Leverages understanding of relevant standards when developing new technologies/products
    • Quality and continuous improvement: Leads specific product quality improvements in own area of responsibility and follows the results
    • Considers quality early in the development process and applies the necessary quality assurance practices
    • Understands what is the 'Voice of the customer' in product quality
    • Proposes and participates in relevant product and process improvement programs
    • Teamwork, collaboration and visibility: Collaborates actively with technical experts from other areas and across functions

    Your background

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering will be considered with additional years of experience and minimum 8 years of relevant work experience
    • Master’s degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering is preferred
    • Occasional domestic and international travel may be required (less than 5 percent)
    • Physical presence at ABB Turbine Automation facility in Pittsburgh, PA is required, but some flexibility in the work arrangement can be implemented
    • Experience with embedded hardware (analog and digital) and embedded software design
    • Experience with the C programming language
    • Experience with VHDL programming, and design & development of FPGAs and CPLD’s
    • Experience with circuit design, schematic entry and PCB layout
    • Experience using specialized tools for embedded development, such as background debuggers and in circuit emulators
    • Experience with TCP/IP, Profibus, OPC-UA, Modbus and/or other information and automation communication protocols
    • Familiarity with rotating machinery automation applications (servo valve control, vibration monitoring, turbine protection, turbine control, auto synchronization, etc)
    • Experience with Distributed Control System (DCS) architectures, functionality and product technologies (controllers, I/O modules, communication modules, etc)
    • R&D level knowledge of ABB products and technologies associated with Harmony, Symphony Plus or 800xA DCS platforms
    • Experience developing and/or debugging software in assembly language, especially with Motorola, Freescale and NXP microprocessors
    • Experience developing real time applications
    • Basic knowledge of oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, function generators and other common lab electronic equipment
