ABB is market leader in fast charging solutions which enable 10-30 min charging time for electric cars and busses, a game changing technology which allows mass adaption of clean transportation. In this highly technological and rising market, we are developing and providing these Electrical Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) across the globe. As Systems Engineer, you will create and develop prototypes, and validate EVSE designs as a key member of our global R&D team. You’ll have the opportunity to use your hardware and software engineering skills to improve our product portfolio working in our advanced R&D laboratories in one of our several Product testing and innovation facilities. If you are looking to utilize your creative technical and problem-solving skills and support critical design and testing of our complex charging systems to enable us to produce and deliver even better and faster chargers for any electric vehicle in the world, we invite you to join our rapidly growing R&D and Technology team! This position will be based in one of the following locations: Richmond, VA, Detroit, MI, Columbia, SC, Raleigh, NC , or Milwaukee, WI

    This position reports to

    Manager – Hardware R&D U.S.

    Your responsibilities

    • Develop, prototype and validate EVSE design covering use case, performance, and cost targets
    • Develop special hardware and software skills to carry out the above development, prototype, and validation activities
    • Build and adapt laboratory test setups, primarily around hardware devices and software (including digital simulation) systems, in support of our prototyping and validation activities
    • Use the laboratory test setup to test, validate, and improve the EVSE design
    • Support product compliance and service initiatives
    • Support and generate new intellectual property (IP), including publishing in peer reviewed journals

    Your background

    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics or related field is required with a minimum of 5 or more years of in electrical/electronic equipment design
    • In lieu of having a degree, we will consider directly related equipment systems engineering experience with 7 or more years of experience
    • Master’s degree, and/or direct industry knowledge of electric vehicle or EV charging a plus
    • Knowledge of power converter control system and modeling is highly preferred
    • Experience with any of the following is preferred:
    • Product Standard Compliance Design
    • Thermal Management
    • Software Engineering
    • Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP)
    • Must be comfortable working in a highly collaborative, global team environment
    • Excellent English language speaking, reading and writing skills and abilities are required
    • Must have a very strong analytical skills with an inquisitive engineering problem solving mindset
    • Ability to travel up to 30% is required, both domestically and internationally
    • Salary range for this position: 100K -125K
    • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
