As Thermal Electrical Design Engineer, you will contribute significantly to new EV charger systems design and analysis supporting product development projects by identifying and implementing innovative solutions. Leveraging your thermal and electro-mechanical engineering technical knowledge, you’ll oversee product development activities and will contribute to strategic technology plans, and the advancement and growth of our EV charger product line portfolio. This position will be based in one of the following locations: Auburn Hills, MI, Columbia, SC, Raleigh, NC, or Milwaukee, WI

    Director, Hardware Engineering, E-mobility

    Your responsibilities

    • Drive applied research and development efforts focusing on innovative thermal and electro-mechanical design technologies for charging infrastructure, complementing experimental work with simulation efforts
    • Design, build and test full scale cabling, cooling or high-power density electrical system prototypes and pilots through hands-on experimental work
    • Conduct root cause analysis of thermal system defects
    • Design, validate and test for performance and quality improvements, supporting our Quality team and customer needs
    • Contribute to creative thinking around new charger system design
    • Working with our suppliers to source components, responsible for building in-house system-level prototypes
    • Define specifications and execute experimental validation tests of supplier offerings and in-house development efforts
    • Work collaboratively in cross-functional project teams including product development teams, supply chain, operations, product management, etc.

    Your background

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field is required with a minimum of 2 -5 years of experience in electro-mechanical or thermal systems design and analysis; Master’s degree strongly preferred
    • In lieu of having a degree, we will consider directly related thermal engineering design experience with 6 or more years of experience
    • Prefer direct experience in industries such as automotive (highly preferred), data centers, system drives, transportation, or similar industry
    • Must have ability to design, build, and test thermal systems, in any of the following: heat exchangers, fans, heatsinks, heat-pipes, two-phase cooling systems, etc
    • Experience testing cooling systems for batteries, power electronics, cabinets, buildings or similar is highly preferred
    • Expertise with Matlab, Labview (or similar) and CAD required; Familiarity with Solidworks is preferred
    • Knowledge of materials and experience with rapid prototyping are a strong plus
    • Must be comfortable working in a highly collaborative, global team environment
    • Excellent English language speaking, reading and writing skills and abilities are required
    • Must be willing and comfortable performing hands-on work, with a can-do mindset
    • Demonstrated ability to meet project timelines and deliverables is required
    • Must be willing and able to travel up to 20% is required
    • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
