    Position summary

    esponsible for supporting the growing General Motors Insurance business within a large captive automobile finance company; this currently includes an auto insurance business, an insurance agency and claims administrative entity. The SVP Associate Counsel provides legal counsel and guidance in the ordinary and special activities of the corporation to ensure maximum protection of its legal rights and to maintain its operations within state and federal limits. This team member provides legal work in the defense of the corporation against suits or claims and/or provides counsel on governmental regulations, and contractual agreements of the company. The SVP Associate Counsel is responsible for handling complex legal matters and projects.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Provide legal counsel and guidance to corporate personnel in various activities to protect the corporation's interests from a legal perspective and prevent legal disputes from occurring.

    • Provide legal advice regarding agency, insurance and adjustor licenses, financial reporting, organizational structure and operations to keep the companies compliant with insurance laws and regulations.

    • Advise on marketing insurance products ensuring that the company conducts its business in compliance with applicable laws and regulations (IP, compliance issues, data privacy, and trade secrets).

    • Advise on rates, rules, forms, telematics and autonomous vehicles on current and future changes keeping in compliance with regulation.

    • Ensure corporate compliance with all relevant federal, state and local laws, regulations and ordinances

    • Assist in the management of outside counsel hired to obtain legal opinions or handle claims and litigation. Manage legal expenses and minimize cost factors for outside attorneys, reports, investigators, and legal services.

    • Prepare and review existing and intended contracts, leases, formal agreements, and other legal instruments to safeguard the corporation's interests.

    • Coordinate the prosecution of corporate lawsuits.

    • Research and produce evidence required in claims by and against organization.

    • Advise on regulatory compliance risk and develop internal process/documentation

    • Interact with State Regulators as necessary.

    • Advise/handle complaints filed with the DOI.

    • Participate in industry trade forums.

    • Perform other duties as assigned

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Broad knowledge of a wide variety of legal standards affecting a publicly held corporation engaging in insurance operations.
      Understanding of property and casualty insurance.
      Strong working knowledge of state insurance laws.

    • Knowledge of local, state, federal and provincial laws with regards to insurance as it applies to General Motors Insurance.

    • Proficiency with online regulatory licensing systems (e.g., NIPR, secretary of state).

    • Strong knowledge of administrative and judicial procedures and the rules of evidence.

    • Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and practices of legal research.

    • Ability to coordinate the preparation and trying of judicial and administrative cases before, local, state, and federal administrative tribunals.

    • Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with consulting attorneys, corporate personnel, court officials, customers, contractors, regulatory agencies and the general public.

    • Effective communication skills including oral, written and presentation

    • Ability to manage heavy workload in a high-pressure environment.

    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex legal documents to protect the corporation's interest.

    • Analytical ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

    • Excellent organization skills.

    • Must be able to work independently and able to use computerized research tools.

    Work Experience
    Greater than 10 years of progressively responsible legal experience in a corporation or law firm Req
    Greater than 10 years of legal experience in the auto insurance industry providing consumer insurance services legal and regulatory advice Req

    Education
    Master's Degree
    Juris Doctor degree and membership in at least one state bar association Required

    Working Conditions

    Fully remote role with frequent travel based on business needs
    Subject to regular deadlines and stressful situations
    Long hours may be required in order to meet departmental goals
