Principal Accountant

Job Description

Ameriprise Financial has an exciting opportunity for Principal Accountant role! The individual contributor would be responsible for performing more complicated accounting processes including bank products and process analysis. The individual would assist in supporting projects, providing technical advice, and back up/support management in daily business operations.

Responsibilities

• Provide direction and lead less-experienced accountants for Advice Wealth Management (AWM) products; bank, brokerage, and lending.

• Perform and back up critical tasks within the team which include but are not limited to: balance sheet reconciliations; settlements; journal entry input, and approvals.

• Supply functional advice and consultation to business partners and assess impact of changes to business as usual processes. Recommend, develop, implement, and train staff on changes that improve standardization, increase efficiency and enhance controls. Develop, implement and support metrics to drive necessary business changes to achieve overall goals.

• Deliver technical accounting advice for the organization and act as subject matter expert to company and regulated accounting policies. May be the organizational expert on certain accounting functions.

• Engagement in project initiatives for AWM accounting that impact the business line. This may include analysis; product/process creation and accounting step development.

Required Qualifications

• Accounting, finance or related degree

• 5+ years of accounting experience

• Strong technical ability using the general ledger, spreadsheets, access databases, flowcharting.

• Ability to lead, collaborate, and influence effectively with internal and external partners; as well as ability to work independently and self-direct to meet priorities.

• Able to communicate accounting concepts and requirements to business partners, technology, and to escalate issues.

• Deep understanding of end-to-end process flows, systems, controls and impacts across financial products/services and business lines.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with the Workday general ledger system

• Accounting experience with deposit or lending products related to bank or brokerage
