Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. The Clinical Pharmacology, Modeling & Simulation Department at Amgen is seeking a Principal Scientist to join the cross-functional global drug development teams at its South San Francisco, CA location.

In this vital role you will be responsible for developing and implementing novel data driven analytics to complement the pharmacometric modeling and make robust inferences supporting innovative therapies.

We are seeking a Subject Matter Expert who will apply innovative quantitative tools including but not limited to : AI/ML based modeling and analytics, multivariate statistical and empirical or mechanistic modeling, data warehousing and automation of complex data workflows, etc. Successful candidate is expected to have advanced skills in modern data architecture, modeling and with computing technologies.

In this role, the principal scientist will assist in a wide range of activities such as working on automation, curation and visualization of complex datasets, developing/recommending novel machine learning tools, collaborate with other modelers to develop workflows and infrastructure to establish quantitative pharmacometric models, clinical trial simulations, literature meta-analysis using quantitative approaches and statistical modeling of historical and preclinical data.

The candidate is expected to be able to integrate modeling results to foster cross functional interactions and to facilitate drug development including dose selection, study design, risk/benefit analysis and regulatory filings.

Other key responsibilities may include:

  • Independent development and implementation of analytics workflows to manipulate large and complex databases from diverse sources including real world data
  • Usher in innovation using knowledge of modern data architecture, data science engineering, data modeling and computing methodologies
  • Responsible for collaborating with partners including various analytics groups like observational research, health economics and statistics, and clinical biostatistics groups to ensure appropriate support for developing platform level analytics and modeling workflows
  • Work closely with other modelers in the department to implement data and modeling workflows to support innovative pharmacometric projects
  • Provide thought leadership, guidance and advice and shape the external environment through scientific publications and presentations
  • May mentor scientific staff

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 3 years of clinical pharmacology experience

OR

Master’s degree and 6 years of clinical pharmacology experience

OR

Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of clinical pharmacology experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Statistical and Data sciences, Computer Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Engineering, or related fields with equivalent professional degrees (https://e.g. MD, PharmD), and 3+ years experience in the life sciences, Biotechnology and/or Pharmaceutical Industry, consulting or post-doctoral training
  • Demonstrated experience with scripting and implementing data analytics algorithms and models. Hands on experience using a modeling software (https://e.g. Python, Matlab, R, Julia, NONMEM, SAS, S-Plus, SQL, etc).
  • Knowledge/Experience in the usage of machine learning/AI tools in life science area(s) and handling life science datasets is preferred
  • Experience in PK/PD modeling and population-based analyses/simulations with established track-record of model-based drug development in multiple therapeutic areas will be an advantage
  • Excellent interpersonal, technical, and communication skills to lead cross-functional teams
  • Previous record of scientific contributions through peer-reviewed articles and external presentations

The annual base salary range for this opportunity in the https://U.S. is **$**149,883 - $172,861. If based in South San Francisco, the annual base salary range is **$**157,434 - $192,079.
