Position Overview
Our team within Autodesk Construction Solutions is looking for an experienced Principal Backend Engineer to join our team to help us build markup and collaboration functionality for Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC). We help customers throughout the construction lifecycle collaborate by adding markups to their 2D blueprints and 3D models. Markups are a core part of our product offering, and as a lead backend developer on the team, you’ll be helping to shape a critical service that stores billions of markups for our customers.
The Markups Team is a cross-platform, remote team of about 15 engineers spread across the US & Canada. Our “backend squad” has three other engineers, and the remainder of the team is a mixture of web and mobile engineers. The team is very product focused, but also serves as an integration point for many other teams that need to use markups as part of their features. Given that, we’re looking for engineers that enjoy building features for our end customers just as much as they enjoy developing ergonomic, powerful, well-documented APIs for their peers. Because of the size and impact of our team, there are many growth and leadership opportunities, as well as opportunities to contribute to the full stack (web and mobile).
Our backend services are built in Python and Node/Typescript, and the team heavily uses Kotlin for cross platform development (we’d like to use it on the backend soon). We use AWS-managed Kubernetes to run our services, and Postgres as our database.
To be successful in this role, you should have considerable backend experience, including scoping, estimating, and leading initiatives with 3+ engineers lasting for 6 months to a year. Ideal candidates will have maintained critical backend services with high uptime requirements, instilled best practices around metrics and monitoring, and have some familiarity with compliance frameworks such as SOC2 or FedRAMP.
This is a remote role, targeted to candidates in the U.S. and Canada. Others working U.S. time zones considered. If you are located in a city with an Autodesk office, you are welcome, but not required to work from an office.
Responsibilities
Develop technical specs and work plans for product initiatives in close collaboration with product managers, designers, and software architects
Gather requirements from other teams for inclusion on the development roadmap
Continuously refine metrics, monitoring, and alerting for our services to ensure high uptime
Participate in on-call rotations with our backend team to ensure production incidents are resolved quickly
Work to refine the team processes to minimize production incidents
Develop backend features in Python and Typescript (potentially Kotlin in the future)
Help shape our backend technical strategy to increase velocity and improve our users’ experience
Minimum Qualifications
Have at least 8 years of professional software development experience, with a significant portion of that focused on backend development
Have a track record of maintaining backend services with high availability
Strong communication skills with the ability to lead technical meetings with other developers and refine ideas with product managers
Expertise with Postgres or another relational database
Experience with Kubernetes
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with Python, NodeJS, Typescript and/or Kotlin
Familiarity or a desire to learn computer graphics
Experience with SOC2 and/or FedRAMP compliance
