Position responsibilities
Leads and provides technical definition of the development and documentation of mechanical systems to establish the overall system design
Leads activities to validate and verify mechanical systems requirements to support program goals and objectives
Performs trade studies, conceptual and detail design definition that meet or exceed specifications for integration into targeted platforms
Performs required first order analysis for aero, structures, payload, weight & balance, power, etc to size systems to vehicle technical constraints to meet range, speed, and performance metrics
Using 3D CAD software (Unigraphics) model complex geometries to create concept-level, detail design sub-system and installation drawings that meet aerospace standards
Works under direction of program manager or chief engineer to support new concept designs, brain-storming efforts, and “out of the box” next generation systems design
Performs parametric sizing analysis and sizing assessment for new clean sheet concept vehicles as required
Perform detailed system design and verification activities
Support system level integration and validation
Analyze system level performance
Perform analyses and trades in support of a rapid prototype system
Manages performance of critical suppliers, as required, to ensure subsystem compliance and delivery
Provides program leadership with budget estimates for design tasks that roll-up into program cost and schedule metrics and performance to plan
Supports proposal preparation and new business development efforts
Works under minimal direction
This position allows some telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at the listed location. On-site work will be at a minimum 3 of 5 days per week.
This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
Experience with basic mechanical engineering principles
3+ years experience with 3D CAD tools (i.e., Unigraphics) for modeling geometry and defining configuration
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
Experience with Rapid Prototyping environments
Experience with 3D printing techniques
Experience with R&D, proof of concept, and first article hardware development
Experience in conceptual, preliminary and detailed design requirements
Working in multidisciplinary teams
Understanding of mechanical specifications requiring fit, form, and function of complex hardware
Typical Education & Experience:
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard
