Practice Area Profile
BCG's Energy practice helps companies navigate an increasingly complex business climate. The practice covers the Oil & Gas and Power & Utilities sectors. We also have deep knowledge in Energy transition and Sustainability, Energy Trading and Risk Management and Energy Engineering and Services. Our projects typically apply BCG's core consulting skills in functional areas such as, digitalization, strategy, organisation or performance improvement, but in the distinctive environment of Energy. We also address projects that touch upon more operational or technical challenges, which we deliver through our expert consultants, occasionally partnering with external specialists. We work with the senior leaders of leading international and national oil companies, service providers, utilities, regulators and financial institutions. The Energy Practice has enjoyed rapid and sustained annual growth over several years, representing about 10% of BCG's global business volume.Worldwide over 300 Partners, Principals and Project Leaders focus in the Energy space, supported by a large group of Energy experienced and trained Consultants and Analysts, many with pre-BCG industry experience. What You'll Do
Your expertise is of vital importance to BCG and our clients. As an Expert Project Leader affiliated to the Energy Practice Area, you will be a core member of the Practice working alongside some of the world's top minds in the industry. You will play a leading role in the growth of our Downstream Oil topic through case execution, client development, and intellectual property & product creation. Most of your time will be spent leading and developing Downstream Oil related project teams composed of members of different backgrounds collaborating with you. You will also dedicate time to further develop and deepen BCG's expertise in these areas, and to support BCG Directors and Partners in business development initiatives.
The responsibilities will fall broadly into two areas:
Client Delivery (focus area)
- Execute, or provide expertise and support to, Downstream Oil projects for our key clients
- Work jointly with BCG and client project teams, bringing expertise to the team and to the client on site
- Provide intellectual leadership for the project teams by generating key ideas and conceptual frameworks to guide research and analysis
- Actively build and manage client/stakeholder relationships throughout strategy development and decision-making processes
Topic and Practice Development
- Actively support our business development efforts: client meetings, industry conferences
- Contribute to the creation of BCG's intellectual capital on the topic : position papers, studies, insights from case experience, tools and products
- Dedicate time to develop own and BCG's expertise developing and driving the content agenda to the next level
- Provide mentorship and support to consultants ensuring continuous individual development
As an Expert Project Leader, you will be integrated into a BCG team and leverage your deep expertise on projects that reshape businesses. You will be given end-to-end responsibility for large and complex modules within a BCG project and may lead small but high-impact teams to drive results for our clients. You will work closely with clients to understand their issues, create strategies for change, and win buy-in for your recommendations, while also collaborating with colleagues on complex client issues. Your expertise will be valued by senior clients and you will help build and contribute to BCG's intellectual capital while spending significant time supporting and executing case work.
Our Expert Consulting Track (ECT)
The Expert Consulting Track (ECT) is vital to BCG's ability to successfully meet our clients' demand for deep expertise and advanced technical capabilities. Experts deliver next-level impact for BCG's most complex and cutting-edge client challenges. Experts focus on developing BCG's thought leadership, commercial capabilities, and intellectual property assets; and their work is essential to our delivery model. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team to bring the 'best of BCG' to our clients, Experts come from diverse backgrounds, with expertise often gained outside of BCG in industry, academia, or specialized consulting.
What You'll Bring (Experience & Qualifications)
You will bring significant experience in Oil Downstream (refining, marketing and/or petrochemicals) and provide expert level knowledge to clients. Additionally, you will have participated in or led client engagements, either in consulting or the industry. You possess expertise and an overview of the global downstream landscape, including an understanding of the market, technology and regulatory trends and know-how to execute strategy and business-build projects. You enjoy working in a team setting and collaborating with colleagues as well as clients.
In addition, the ideal candidate possesses:
- 5-8+ years of relevant experience including consulting in the downstream oil space and/or industry experience in technical and leadership roles
- Strong analytical skills and a high capacity for conceptual thinking. Ability to develop leading edge business models, frameworks for analysis, and long-term business strategies that maximize shareholder value
- Proven ability to manage client engagements, client relationships and provide "thought leadership" to teams
- An advanced degree (ideally MSc, MBA or Ph.D.) with strong academic results preferred
