    Carrier Fire & Security, the world’s largest manufacturer of fire safety products, is seeking a Machine Maintenance Technician for the Kidde Fire Systems business in Ashland, MA! Kidde Fire Systems provides fire suppression solutions that protect people and property from the effects of fire. For over 100 years, industry leaders and the military have relied on Kidde Fire Systems to deliver outstanding fire detection and suppression for their mission-critical applications.

    The Machine Maintenance Technician will be responsible for all planned preventive maintenance and repairs of machinery and equipment located within the Machine Shop. The ideal candidate will have a high degree of mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills, with the ability to maintain flexibility in arranging the daily workload to support the needs of the customer with an emphasis on minimizing downtime of critical machinery.

    This position reports directly to the Facilities Manager, frequently collaborating with other facilities, operations, and process engineering team members.

    Specific responsibilities for this position include:

    • Performing diagnostic work, repairs, and upgrades for a variety of manual and automatic machinery including CNC machines, lathes, mills, drills, presses, saws, and other associated equipment.
    • Completing scheduled Preventive Maintenance (PM) tasks.
    • Performing inspections of machine guards, safety devices, and controls.
    • Utilizing the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for the administration of PM work orders and work requests, including creating and updating schedules, procedures, and tasks.
    • Identifying the need for, ordering, and maintaining an inventory of spare parts for critical machinery.
    • Coordinating activities of outside repair technicians and other service providers when necessary.
    • Utilizing data to identify the causes of machine downtime and recommending/implementing improvements.
    • Participating in manufacturing process improvement teams and applying Carrier Excellence (CE) tools as appropriate, such as Total Productive Maintenance, Value Stream Mapping, Kaizen, Process Maps, and RAILs, to drive positive change throughout machining operations.
    • Supporting Facilities team members as needed for projects within other manufacturing departments.
    • Assisting with maintaining a safe working environment for all employees.
    • Following all related company safety requirements such as, but not limited to; lock out/tag out, electrical safety, compressed gas, working from heights, and proper use of personal protective equipment.
    • Managing related hazardous and non-hazardous wastes in accordance with company policies and procedures.
    • Must be able to lift 35+ lbs.  

    Required Experience:

    • H.S. Diploma or equivalent with 5+ years of hands-on experience in diagnostics, repair work, and preventive maintenance of machine shop equipment within a manufacturing environment.
    • Working knowledge of electrical/electronic controls.
    • Working knowledge of pumps, hydraulic systems, pneumatics, and controls.
    • Working knowledge and application of machine guarding systems, safety controls, and interlocks.
    • Ability to read and interpret standard work instructions, manuals, blueprints, schematics, and control diagrams.
    • Computer proficiency, specifically with Microsoft Windows, Excel, and Word.

    Preferred Experience:

    • Formal training in CNC and/or manual machining experience. Trade/vocational school certificate or equivalent.
    • Formal training in machine repair and maintenance.
    • Formal training in electrical/electronic controls.
    • Working knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems.
    • Experience with continuous improvement activities utilizing Lean principles.
