The Office of the CTO at Equinix is looking for a “Distinguished Engineer, Physical Infrastructure” who will join a team of seasoned technologists chartered with:
Driving next-generation technology development & innovation to guide decisions on new investments and service offerings;
Developing the company’s technology roadmap and target architecture to advance the vision of Platform Equinix based on a “software-defined-everything” model; and
Delivering industry thought leadership, with a focus on building a closer engagement with the software developer community
We are looking for seasoned technologists who bring a deep passion for innovation in physical infrastructure (physical data center, power, rack-level infrastructure, etc.) and new perspectives from diverse technology backgrounds and areas, including, and not limited to, software-defined data center, open hardware, distributed systems, cloud-native computing, artificial intelligence, etc.
The “Distinguished Engineer, Physical Infrastructure” role reports directly to the Chief Technology Officer at Equinix.
While the preferred location for the role is our global headquarters in Redwood City, CA (or Sunnyvale, CA), there is an option for the selected candidate to be based at other major Equinix locations.
As a Distinguished Engineer, you will have the opportunity to drive new next-generation technology initiatives; help drive the technology vision and target architecture of Platform Equinix; significantly contribute to improving Equinix’s technology stack; and serve as a mentor and thought leader to the technical community at Equinix.

Responsibilities
Provide in-depth technical expertise to identify and evaluate next-generation technologies and assess their impact to the physical infrastructure of future at Equinix (spanning datacenter and hardware domains)
Drive proof-of-concept technology development initiatives, in close partnership with stakeholders, to deliver tangible outcomes that will help guide new technology investments and design decisions for physical infrastructure
Provide senior thought leadership to deliver architecture recommendations for the evolution of physical infrastructure at Equinix with a focus on a software-defined-everything vision and based on emerging technologies and trends, including, and not limited to, high power density, next-generation cooling and energy management, sustainability, silicon roadmap, physical/hardware-based security, cloud-native deployments, quantum computing, etc
Serve as a visible technology thought leader in the industry through various engagements focused on articulating the technology vision and unique value proposition of Platform Equinix, including in interactions with customers, partners, forums, analysts and investment community
Qualifications
Preferably, a Ph.D. or Master’s degree in computer science, or relevant engineering field
20+ years of experience, including 12+ years of relevant infrastructure technology, architecture or engineering leadership experience
Demonstrable leadership, visionary accomplishments, and extensive experience in developing physical infrastructure technologies and architectures implemented in large-scale/mission-critical deployments. Examples include solid background in physical infrastructure architecture, engineering, DevOps, security, tooling, products, etc
Solid understanding of software-defined physical infrastructure architectures (digital twins, software-defined energy management, etc.), open hardware, physical infrastructure observability, sustainability and security
Excellent writing and verbal communications skills from engineering to executive
Excellent collaboration and people skills
The targeted pay range for this position in the following location is / locations are:
Our pay ranges reflect the minimum and maximum target for new hire pay for the full-time position determined by role, level, and location. Individual pay is based on additional factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education and/or training.

The targeted pay range listed reflects the base pay only and does not include bonus, equity, or benefits. Employees are eligible for bonus, and equity may be offered depending on the position.
