Job Summary

The Office of the CTO at Equinix is looking for a “Distinguished Engineer, Software” who will join a team of seasoned technologists chartered with:

• Driving next-generation technology development & innovation to guide decisions on new investments and service offerings;

• Developing the company’s technology roadmap and target architecture to advance the vision of Platform Equinix based on a “software-defined-everything” model; and

• Delivering industry thought leadership, with a focus on building a closer engagement with the software developer community.

We are looking for seasoned technologists who bring a deep passion for innovation in software development and new perspectives from diverse technology backgrounds and areas, including, and not limited to, cloud-native computing, distributed systems, software-defined infrastructure (data center, hardware, networking, compute), artificial intelligence, etc.

The “Distinguished Engineer, Software” role reports directly to the Chief Technology Officer at Equinix.

While the preferred location for the role is our global headquarters in Redwood City, CA (or Sunnyvale, CA), there is an option for the selected candidate to be based at other major Equinix locations.

As a Distinguished Engineer, you will have the opportunity to drive new next-generation technology initiatives; help drive the technology vision and target architecture of Platform Equinix; significantly contribute to improving Equinix’s technology stack; and serve as a mentor and thought leader to the technical community at Equinix.

Responsibilities

• Provide in-depth technical expertise to identify and evaluate innovations in software development and assess their impact to the infrastructure of future at Equinix (spanning datacenter, hardware, networking, compute)

• Drive proof-of-concept software development initiatives, in close partnership with stakeholders, to deliver tangible outcomes that will help guide new technology investments and design decisions

• Provide senior thought leadership to deliver target software architecture blueprints and recommendations for the evolution of the technology stack at Equinix

• Serve as a visible technology thought leader in the industry through various engagements, including within the open-source and developer communities (e.g. the Linux Foundation) and in interactions with customers, partners, media and analysts

Qualifications

• Preferably, a Ph.D. or Master’s degree in computer science, or relevant engineering field

• 20+ years of experience, including 12+ years of relevant software architecture or engineering leadership experience

• Demonstrable leadership, visionary accomplishments, and extensive experience in developing software technologies and architectures implemented in large-scale/mission-critical deployments

• Examples include solid background in infrastructure/application architecture, engineering, DevOps, security, tooling, products, etc

• Solid understanding of cloud-native computing and modern software architectures for distributed infrastructure

• Excellent writing and verbal communications skills from engineering to executive

• Excellent collaboration and people skills

The targeted pay range for this position in the following location is / locations are:

• San Francisco, CA / Bay Area:  $225,000 to $405,000

Our pay ranges reflect the minimum and maximum target for new hire pay for the full-time position determined by role, level, and location. Individual pay is based on additional factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education and/or training.

This position may be offered in other locations. Your recruiter can share more about the specific pay range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

NON-SALES ROLES

The targeted pay range listed reflects the base pay only and does not include bonus, equity, or benefits. Employees are eligible for bonus, and equity may be offered depending on the position.
