Database Administrators are responsible for the definition, creation and maintenance of enterprise databases.  Database Administrators analyze, test and implement physical database designs supporting various business applications (including structure, documentation, long-range requirements, operational guidelines); and ensure data recovery, maintenance, data integrity and space requirement needs are assessed and met.

Essential Functions: 

  • Build database systems of high availability and quality depending on end user requirements
  • Resolve problems and answer questions related to the database and platform environment (e.g. Windows, UNIX, LINUX and Azure)
  • Closely monitor performance; identify problems and implement solutions; ensure database is running at optimum speed and efficiency
  • Respond quickly to refresh data; verify implementation of correct backup strategy; develop recovery procedures; support recovery from loss of data caused by user or system error
  • Proactively monitor databases to keep them at current release and maintenance levels; install supporting products; provide current stable production and development environments
  • Use tools to reorganize or de-fragment database table spaces, tables and indexes; provide efficient database environment to maximize productivity and improve performance.
  • Refresh data from one environment to another at the request of the application development staff; execute necessary tasks to accomplish this, including export, drop, create and import
  • Research and recommend optimal design criteria; publish standards and work with development staff; standardize environment and improve efficiency
  • Monitor file system space, database allocation, etc.; verify efficient use of disk storage; reclaim dead space; optimize space allocation and avoid out of space conditions

Technical Knowledge/Skill/Education/Licenses/Certifications:

Technical Knowledge/Skill: 

  • Hands-on experience implementing/supporting Oracle databases as well as supporting advanced features and capabilities (e.g. RMAN, RAC, Data Guard, EBS, OEM tuning.)
  • Hands-on experience implementing and supporting MS SQL Server in various deployment models (SQL on VM and SQL Managed)
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Azure as it pertains to database technologies - IaaS and PaaS
  • Exposure to multiple database technical configurations, technologies and processing environments
  • Knowledge of many, if not most, aspects of the technology domain architecture, including current technology, emerging capabilities, best practices and patterns as well as management and operating model considerations
  • Understanding and knowledge of IT standards and controls
  • Ability to work effectively with business and technical roles
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in areas such as teamwork, facilitation and negotiation
  • Excellent analytical and technical skills; Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, and the ability to manage smaller efforts
  • Ability to balance the long-term (big picture) and short-term implications of individual decisions

Education:      

  • Bachelor’s degree required.  Advanced degree preferred.         

Experience:     

  • Minimum of ten (10) years related experience working with technology or application solutions, including experience in architecture, design, implementation, support and management of the technologies appropriate for the specific positions.                         

Working Conditions:

  • Must be available to work emergency storm assignment as required.
  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
  • Work is performed primarily in an office environment which requires standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, writing and typing.  Work involves using a computer and telephone as well as personal communication.
