At Facebook Reality Labs, our goal is to invent the user interface technologies that will drive the future of augmented-reality experiences. Our aim is to unleash human potential by erasing the bottlenecks between intent and action. As a Postdoctoral Research Scientist, you would focus on developing novel systems for augmented reality glasses that infer interaction intent using environmental, behavioural, and/or physiological signals, and adapt the user interface to provide high quality interactions. Our adaptive interaction research lies at the intersection of cognitive science, machine learning, and human-computer interaction. Researchers are expected to collaborate to integrate their work into real-time interactive systems in our lab and validate their solutions through user studies. Researchers will have the opportunity to publish in peer-reviewed conferences and journals and should collaborate effectively with cross-disciplinary experts, including applied machine learning, perceptual science, design, and software engineering.
- Plan and execute cutting-edge research that infers interaction intent using environmental, behavioural, and/or physiological signals (e.g., eye-tracking)
- Work collaboratively with other scientists and designers to develop methods to engages the user to reduce interaction uncertainty through novel adaptive interface concepts
- Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and designers across disciplines to solve complex problems
Publish and present papers at international conferences and journals and attend top conferences in the field
- Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD in the field of human-computer interaction, cognitive science, computational neuroscience, computer science, or similar.
- Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
- Interpersonal skills: cross-group collaboration and cross-culture collaboration.
- Experience with scientific programming languages such as Python, R, or similar.
- Proven track record of achieving research results and innovation as demonstrated by first-authored publications and/or patents.
- Experience designing and analyzing user studies and improving research projects through user/participant behaviour and feedback.
Experience developing models of human behaviour (e.g., eye-tracking, input patterns).
- Experience working with eye-tracking data.
- Experience developing adaptive user interface solutions (visual, haptic) that reduce uncertainty of interaction intent and improve the interaction experience.
- Experience building computational models of interaction intent or cognitive state (e.g., attention, working memory, cognitive load).
- Experience with machine learning (e.g., time-series modeling, deep learning, RL).
- Experience updating models in real-time based on user actions in an interface (e.g., human-in-the-loop machine learning).
Experience working with data in naturalistic environments and continuous tasks.
