Position summary

Job Description Summary

Steam Power Steam Turbine and Generator Engineering Technology require a Materials Engineer to join the existing materials team to undertake various tasks, including to provide specialist advice to engineering, sourcing, purchasing and supplier quality.

The successful candidate will have a good general knowledge of materials science, particularly the metallurgy of steels; steel making, foundry theory and practice including the heat treatment of steels; quality systems applicable to the steel industry; and ideally experience of dealing with suppliers including qualification and root cause analysis of failures.

Knowledge of the practical issues relating to the forging and/or casting of large steel components is highly desirable.
Qualification in one or more NDE techniques is highly desirable.

Job Description

Essential Functions / Responsibilities within their technical domain:

  • Providing specialist technical support for order execution to the supply chain and engineering.
  • Developing and qualifying new suppliers of steam turbine components (including large forgings, casting and fabrications).
  • Contributing to root cause analyses of failures.
  • Reviewing and approving suppliers’ manufacturing process plans.
  • Developing best working practices in collaboration with the controlled title holders.
  • Communicating within supplier and customers as required to support the business objectives.
  • Occasional international travel to suppliers and customers as required.

Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate is likely to have a first or higher degree in Metallurgy or Materials Science or closely related subject.  Candidates who have acquired a similar level of knowledge through practical experience will also be considered.
  • Technical knowledge in the domain, covering both the technology and the product.
  • Strong experience of successful delivery in an engineering environment.
