Job Description Summary

As the Radiation Protection Manager for GE Hitachi Nuclear's Vallecitos Nuclear Center (VNC), you will provide radiation safety technical support and leadership at VNC, a commercial nuclear research facility. You will lead a team of radiation protection technicians, and be responsible for promoting team safety, efficiency, and positive team engagement. As VNC's Radiation Safety Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the Radiation Protection requirements of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Special Nuclear Material (SNM) license, a NRC Licensed Nuclear Test Reactor, and a State of California License for Radiological Materials. Additionally, you will recommend changes to the radiation safety program including design criteria, procedures, and training.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Radiation Protection Manager and Radiation Safety Officer will provide leadership for VNC’s radiation protection.  Strict adherence to nuclear safety, EHS and other compliance requirements is critical.  Responsibilities include:

  • Embrace GEH’s nuclear safety culture, where work is performed with an overriding priority on integrity, safety, security, and quality.
  • Ensure conformance with all compliance and safety regulations. Understand and adhere to VNC nuclear safety protocols for materials, equipment, and facilities.
  • Ensure compliance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and State of California operating licenses and all other local permits.
  • Provide technical and programmatic l leadership for radiation protection site matters, including support of (1) an operating neutron radiography test reactor; (2) a shielded, confined area hot cell facility used for remote work on radioactive materials; (3)  D&D operations for three shutdown power and test reactors; (4) other laboratories and facilities utilized by internal and external entities.
  • Implement the Radiation Protection instrumentation, TLD badge, respiratory protection, sealed source inventory, contamination control and bioassay programs
  • Provide oversight of gamma spec and Tennelec (alpha) counting systems
  • Coordinate radiation protection activities at the site, providing effective utilization of RP staff
  • Provide technical leadership and support to facility managers on radiological safety control measures and ALARA goals
  • Lead and coordinate annual radiological safety employee training program
  • Assess the effectiveness of the radiological safety program through participation on internal audit and providing technical support of the Emergency Response Organization. Participate in emergency response, including emergency planning and exercises.
  • Supervisor for assigned team members.  Train, supervise and manage employees’ activities, following appropriate procedures and protocol.
  • Champion positive employee relations. Promote a working environment that encourages employee involvement to achieve excellence in compliance, nuclear safety, EHS, customer service and productivity. 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in applied radiation protection
  • Minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience

Eligibility Requirements

  • Ability and willingness to pass background check and site security requirements to obtain and maintain access to safeguards, and unescorted access to protected GEH Vallecitos areas.
  • Ability and willingness to work in Radiological Controlled Access Areas, pass pulmonary function test and wear proper radiological personal protective equipment (PPE) including respiratory protection.
  • Ability to use a computer.  Frequent use of computer equipment.
  • Ability to move around equipment, use ladders, go into pits.
  • Must maintain after hours cell phone availability

Desired Characteristics

  • Degree in Health Physics
  • Experience working in Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulated environment
  • Experience in radiological safety with uranium
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively interface at all levels of the organization
  • Certified Health Physicist (CHP), experience with uranium health physics
  • Qualified to NAVSEA 389-0153 Article 108, NAVSEA 389-0288 Article 108, or hold National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT) certification
  • Proficiency in standard Microsoft Office applications, Access and Oracle software
  • Six Sigma or Lean manufacturing certification
  • Established project management skills. Ability to document, plan, and execute projects and programs.

This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology. GE will require proof of status prior to employment.
