The Senior Applications Engineer will lead new business pursuits, develop common system architectures, lead R&D activities, and demonstrate accountability for functional, business, and broad company objectives. In this role, you will contribute to the overall business strategy.

In addition, you will:

  • Provide technical direction for hardware/circuit board architecture and for designing within size constraints.

  • Manage technical proposal development, including Job Analysis (JA) and support the bid approval process for new business pursuits.

  • Provide technical oversight for Flight Recorders.

  • Be an expert in the Flight Recorders product domain.

  • Identify enabling / discriminating technologies and Intellectual Property (IP) required to achieve business objectives of the Recorders product area.

  • Define key technology / competency / IP gaps for the Recorders product area.

  • Identify and prioritize product area IR&D topics and budgets.

  • Support Sales / Marketing in documenting the product area's relative technical competitive position and market trends.

  • Participate in Strategic Planning.

  • Contribute to business development and program management strategic initiatives.

  • Provide inputs to Multi-Generational Technology Plan.

  • Oversee technical support of product area relevant industry working groups and conferences.

  • Provide knowledge, including detailed understanding of aerospace hardware, systems, and software – Business Pursuit.

  • Support teaming with customers and industry partners to define product requirements and to lead response teams for Customer Presentations, Technical White Papers, RFIs, and RFPs.

  • Cultivate strong relationships with technical counterparts at our customers.

  • Gather customer requirements for Recorders.

  • Provide key technical requirements for the Job analysis used during Bid and Proposal activities.

  • Verify that the critical technical customer requirements are met by our proposals.

  • Support bid approval presentations.

  • Provide technical support to Recorders Program Managers to ensure projects are successful and that the profit objectives are met.

  • Serve as lead system architect for Recorders, developing design solutions and guiding them from concept to production.

  • Establish a common platform architecture to support multiple processors, IO solutions, APIs, and Real Time Operating Systems.

  • Establish strategy for the evolution of a multi-generational/reusable product.

  • Oversee IPDT efforts for large, complex (high risk), or multi-site programs within the product area.

  • Identify design re-use opportunities to reduce cost and risk.

  • Provide continuity within and across multiple programs to maximize synergies.

  • Maintain a product area specific Technical Lessons Learned database.

  • Mentor junior engineers to develop their product domain knowledge.

  • Troubleshoot major problems with our suppliers, partners, or customers.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  •  Bachelor's Degree in an engineering field from an accredited college or university.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in Engineering Design.

  • Grand Rapids, MI opportunity (hybrid 2-3 days a week) relocation friendly opportunity).

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience with hardware/circuit board design and mechanical packaging constraints.

  • Existing domain expertise in the area of flight recorders.

  • Experience with new business pursuit / proposal development.

  • Participation / experience on Recorders-related industry committee activities.

  • Experience in working directly with customers and their leadership

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.

  • Ability to guide and influence others.

  • Demonstrated process orientation in approach to work.
