Data Center Technician

Minimum qualifications:

• 4 years of experience working in a Data Center.

• Experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, maintaining, and monitoring computers.

• Experience in Hardware, Networking Equipment, Operating Systems, and Data Center Operations.

• Experience communicating, working, and partnering with teams.

Preferred qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.

• Experience working with and troubleshooting hardware/network related issues using Linux based tools.

• LPIC or equivalent experience working with Linux (e.g., Red Hat, Slackware, Fedora, SUSE, Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo) or Unix (e.g., Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, BSD), and/or another similar OS (e.g. Windows).

• Understanding of intermediate operating systems, personal computer hardware and networking concepts, tools and protocols.

About the job

Google isn't just a software company. The Hardware Operations team is responsible for monitoring the state-of-the-art physical infrastructure behind Google's powerful search technology. As an Operations Technician, you'll install, configure, test, troubleshoot and maintain hardware (like servers and its components) and server software (like Google's Linux cluster). You'll also take on the configuration of more complex components such as networks, routers, hubs, bridges, switches and networking protocols. You'll participate in or lead small project teams on larger installations and develop project contingency plans. A typical day involves manual movement and installation of racks, and while it can sometimes be physically demanding, you are excited to work with infrastructure that is at the cutting-edge of computer technology.

As a Data Center Technician, you'll deploy and maintain Google's advanced Data Center Server and Network Infrastructure. You'll also participate in or lead local project teams on larger installations and develop project contingency plans.

In this role, duties range from the physical deployment of data center-related technology to working closely with the various stakeholders. It will fall to you to ensure that our goals, missions and projects are successfully delivered, and, more importantly, that they are repeatable across our global array of data centers.

This position offers a great introduction to the wider engineering world at Google. Depending on your area of interest, capabilities, and geographical mobility, you will have the opportunity to develop either within a third-party data center (3PDC) or move towards software development, engineering, networking operations or our project management groups.
