    Our Office of the General Counsel is hiring a Counsel to join our growing team in MA or in a hybrid or fully remote work arrangement.  

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    As a member of the Insurance Law team within the Office of the General Counsel, this attorney will be primarily responsible for supporting our Agency Distribution channel and field management across all lines of business (personal, commercial, and specialty).

    This is a full-time, exempt role. 

    IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL: 

    • Provide legal counsel to one or more departments or operating units, in particular those that interact with independent insurance agents, brokers, and other agency-side professionals.
    • Research and prepare legal documents, including significant focus on agency/broker agreements, agency compensation, and other distribution-focused contractual agreements; negotiate with outside parties, render opinions, consult with and advise clients, and represents the company in dealing with others.
    • Maintain ongoing relationships and accountability for the unit(s) being served.
    • Work closely with senior management to evaluate legal impact of major decisions where applicable law, regulations, or facts are unclear, controversial, or conflicting.
    • Write legal opinions that sometimes require extensive research of statutes, regulations, or court decisions in complex areas of the law.
    • Explain problems, ideas, and concepts to junior staff that are to be incorporated into work assignments.
    • Manage outside counsel relationships on matters, as appropriate. 

    WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY: 

    • Juris Doctorate with 6-8+ years professional experience. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience;

    • Ability to:  

    • Apply a comprehensive knowledge of contractual issues and agent/broker relationships to the completion of difficult assignments, while navigating challenging and sometimes conflicting internal and external dynamics.

    • Engage in complex negotiations with sophisticated counterparties.

    • Collaborate effectively and manage through influence.

    • Plan, conduct and supervise assignments within established guidelines.

    • Review progress and evaluate results.

    • Train less experienced employees in technical complexities of assigned work.

    • Recommend changes in procedures.

    • Operate with substantial latitude for un-reviewed action or decision.

    • Review progress with management.

    • Be accountable for reporting on project status for one or more larger projects that may be assigned.
