    Our Hanover Specialty Industrial team is seeking Property Risk Engineering Field Technical Consultant (Wood Products Specialist Role)

     

    Our Hanover Specialty Industrial (HSI) department is seeking a Property Risk Engineering Field Consultant to join our growing team in a remote-based role, that will be a specialist in the wood products industry, but able to complete risk engineering assessments for various industries. It is anticipated that 90% or more of the work is related to primary (sawmills, plywood mills, etc.) or secondary (cabinetry, molding, re-manufacturing) facilities.Much of the work is in/around the Pacific Northwest (Seattle, Portland areas), but will also include travel to Idaho, Montana, California, Colorado, and possibly other areas of the country. Candidate’s travel requirements will be based on their primary office/home location, but travel will be required as necessary to complete 100-120 wood products facility visits per year, with much of that being overnight travel. Candidate does not have to reside in the Pacific Northwest region or other areas noted, but this is preferred.

    Role Overview and Summary:

    • Perform risk engineering site inspections of existing policyholders with all levels of complexity, with a concentration on wood products related facilities.
    • Collaborate with Risk Analysts to assist insureds in solving/resolving identified property risk engineering deficiencies.
    • Occasionally partner with the Technical/Project Specialist on various projects and initiatives within the loss control department to further develop technical knowledge of the processes and controls specific to the operations conducted at insured locations.
    • Partner periodically with less experienced Risk Engineering Field Consultants as a mentor as part of their continued development related to build skills in report generation and performing audits/managing accounts of increasing complexity, with a concentration on the wood products industry.
    • Partner periodically with Field Operations Managers in the training of newly hired consultants through joint travel and follow-up.
    • Effectively communicate with management and team to ensure successful adoption of changes to strategy, operations, underwriting appetite, and philosophy
    • Coordinate with internal and external resources on moderately-complex risks.

    Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
    Estimated time allocation (subject to change):

    • Conduct property risk engineering field inspections of existing and prospective policyholders including consulting with customers regarding solutions to identified property risk engineering exposures/deficiencies; Workload may fluctuate based on territory/area and other wood products related functions. (45%)
    • Provide input and contributing in the completion of various risk engineering related projects. (5%)
    • Occasionally conduct joint/training risk engineering field inspections for training related to wood products facilities (10%)

    Experience, Skills, and Competencies:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering discipline preferred.
    • Generally, 12+ years in technical and/or engineering related experience, much if not all that is relevant to the wood products industry.
    • Good understanding of NFPA Codes and Standards or equivalent (Factory Mutual Guidelines)
    • Strong technical/analytical skills, computer skills and interpersonal skills
    • Strong organizational skills
    • Strong technical writing skills
    • Strong operational understanding of Risk Engineering core competencies
    • Demonstrates the ability to adapt quickly to change, identify, analyze, and solve problems and a willingness to consider new and different ways of thinking.
