This role will ensure corporate compliance with global indirect tax laws, including VAT, GST, and other miscellaneous indirect taxes. A qualified candidate must have well-developed interpersonal skills and should be able to effectively communicate with all levels throughout the organization. The candidate must be an organized thinker with strong tax, accounting, analytical and computer skills. They must be able to effectively manage multiple priorities and have the ability to work independently as well as part of the tax team.
How you will impact Ingevity:
- Responsibility for indirect tax function within the UK and Europe with oversight of APAC compliance.
- Gather data from SAP and other sources, check for accuracy, and manage consultants' preparation of all indirect tax filings.
- Ensure tax software (Vertex) is accurately capturing all data necessary to ensure accuracy in reporting indirect tax filings.
- Review monthly, timely processing of outsourced VAT and take responsibility for their accuracy
- Ensure timely filing of required tax returns and associated payments.
- Proactively prepare, gather, analyze and format materials to defend and support VAT, and refund filings.
- Prepare monthly indirect tax account reconciliations including resolution of discrepancies if identified.
- Assist with audit coordination and defense and ensure timely and accurate resolution.
- Research and respond to external taxation issues and questions from taxing authorities
- Recognize, anticipate, and resolve tax issues, and make recommendations as applicable
- Maintain tax related sub-systems and ensure configuration facilitates proper reporting and defense of return positions.
- Complete analysis of potential contingencies and maintain supporting documentation.
- Maintain limited Sarbanes-Oxley documentation and oversee required testing.
- Identify tax savings and exposures and effectively communicate such findings
- Liaise with Accounts Receivable department to resolve customer disputes involving indirect tax.
- Conduct periodic VAT training for internal dependent functions (order management, A/R, customer service, procurement).
- Ensure application of refunds by the taxing authority when necessary
- Ensure company maintains compliance in all countries by tracking all forms to comply with individual taxing jurisdiction requirements
- Conduct special tax research projects, such as research on proposed transactions, reaching appropriate conclusions and applying authority to support conclusions
What you need to succeed:
- BA/BS in Accounting or Finance.
- 3-6 years working experience in finance, tax or accounting is required.
- Public accounting and/or corporate tax department desired.
- CPA or comparable certification desirable.
- Understanding of VAT compliance especially in UK and EU
- Ability to identify VAT process weaknesses and implement improvements
- Ability to resolve complex VAT compliance issues, and recognize the need for internal or external subject matter expertise
- Self-starter with strong accounting, analytical, creative problem-solving and project management skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management in an organization.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficient computer skills including strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Experience with ERP systems (e.g., SAP), indirect tax software (e.g., Vertex), and tax research sites (e.g., RIA Checkpoint, BNA) desirable.
- 10-15% international travel may be required.
- This role is eligible for relocation assistance. Given a candidate's experience level this role may have the flexibility to be remote.
