Senior Communications Manager- Data Driven Storytelling

Overview

We are looking for a Senior Communications Manager focused on data-driven storytelling to join the QuickBooks communications team. This person is a master of working with data and seeing the story in the numbers. If you have a background in data-based journalism, data analysis, economics, data visualization, and project management, this will be a great role for you—especially if you are looking to join an ambitious, multi-disciplinary team. The successful candidate will be responsible for working directly with the team leader to continue to define, build, and execute on the QuickBooks’ data communications strategy and program. This person will also work closely with other teams across the business — including PR, government affairs, data analytics, content, social media, design, brand, marketing, engineering, product, and legal; as well as external agencies, suppliers, and subject matter experts.

What you'll bring

• 5+ years of experience with analytics in communications, marketing, strategy, product or business roles. Bachelor’s degree in communications or mathematics-related areas (statistics, marketing analysis or other quantitative disciplines). Master’s degree preferred, or equivalent experience.
• Experience with data analysis software, tools, and techniques, including Excel and Google Sheets. Knowledge of SPSS will be an advantage.
• Knowledge of data visualization tools such as Tableau, Datawrapper, Data Studio, etc, will be a distinct advantage.

Skills and Experience

• Compelling communicator with a natural news instinct and the ability to write great copy.
• A good head for numbers and strong understanding of basic statistical analysis — including pivot tables and the ability to find statistically significant results.
• Research expertise with a strong track record of using robust data to create content such as news hooks, headlines, stories, and reports.
• Demonstrable experience of using data insights to generate earned media coverage (e.g news, blogs, social media, thought leadership, etc).
• Ability to design and run effective surveys, and quickly turn the findings into meaningful narratives for a variety of audiences, including journalists, bloggers, influencers, economists and policymakers.
• Self-motivation and curiosity to identify reliable external sources of data and insights through desk research.
• Proven ability to hit tight deadlines when working collaboratively with other teams.
• Excellent organizational skills with experience of managing complex projects/programs which involve a variety of stakeholders and launch milestones.
• Great business acumen with the ability to identify and prioritize the highest-impact project needs.
• Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills with the ability to influence other teams and individuals with different aims and priorities.
• Effective data visualization skills for both internal and external audiences.
• Ability to work both collaboratively and independently with a high level of self-motivation

How you will lead

• Help to develop, build, and execute on QuickBooks’ data communications strategy and program to support business goals through data-driven storytelling.
• Conduct data analysis on survey data to draw out newsworthy, storytelling insights.
• Evaluate data indexes/customer data sources to pull out interesting insights for storytelling.
• Work collaboratively with stakeholders within the QuickBooks business (comms/PR, social, marketing, government affairs, analytics, engineering, product, Legal, etc.) and external partners.
• Contribute data insights to story development and other tactical endeavors (like events) that drive the QuickBooks story.
• Write and design survey questionnaires then analyze the data to reveal key findings.
• Review content and data for accuracy.
• Review external content, news, and trends to inform our data communications strategy.
• Contribute to annual strategic planning and budget management.
