The Associate Director, Global Vivarium Operations, Program Coordination & Management will provide global support for the operational & strategic planning for in-house vivaria in alignment with Global IVS, Janssen Research & Development, Johnson & Johnson, and regulatory standards support and coordination for essential aspects of the Animal Care & Welfare Program in San Francisco, CA. Responsibilities: Supports the SFB site lead and the Regional North America Lead with the execution of key programmatic elements for the San Francisco Bay site and North American region in accordance with global harmonized standards, including but not limited to development and implementation of quality management and preventative maintenance programs, support operational budget planning, purchase of capital equipment and supplies, and effective management of the infrastructure and physical plant of the vivarium Assures that the care and welfare of laboratory animals is provided in accordance with internal and external standards & regulations Play a key role in performing local activities in alignment with the IVS global strategy and global harmonization efforts Responsible for providing support to the North American, in accordance with global harmonized standards and all aspects of vivarium operations and management Design, develop and/or implement new systems and approaches that promote operational efficiencies and support acceleration of the in vivo research activities Responsible for the supporting the implementation and monitoring of resourcing and Insourced staffing models at the SFB site Interpretation and application of regulatory or policy to provide practical and maintainable and organizational “fit for purpose” solutions In partnership with the IVS Site Lead, manage the local business continuity and disaster planning for the vivarium Support the evaluation and deployment of In Vivo Sciences Data Sciences and Information Technology (IT) initiatives enabling enhanced capabilities across Janssen internal vivarium Maintains records to align with applicable local, state, federal regulations, applicable animal welfare accreditation standards, and internal compliance regulations Support operational excellence by collecting metrics and operational trends within the animal care & welfare programs, including supporting the development and implementation of operational best practices & procedures Audits and evaluates systems, operations, and/or processes for compliance with appropriate work instructions/standard operating procedures and regulatory compliance requirements Provides guidance on the interpretation of animal welfare guidelines, and AAALAC requirements Conducts business process reviews with a focus on continuous improvement, efficiencies, and global harmonization and lean or agile principles Participates on various local and global committees to represent the department, or the company, to internal and external partners Promotes a Culture of Care and serve as a visible and effective champion for the 3Rs Qualifications Requirements: Bachelors degree in management, project management, animal sciences, or related subject areas is required Master’s degree or other advanced degrees (DVM, VMD, Ph.D.) in management, project management, animal sciences, or related subject areas is preferred Minimum of five (5) years of pharmaceutical/biotechnology in vivo sciences or animal care and welfare programs, vivarium operations or facility management is required Strong communicator who can translate legal, operational, and scientific requirements into practical language in forms to be used by the organization is required Advanced working knowledge of applicable USDA, FDA, GLPs, GMPs, applicable animal welfare guidelines, and AAALAC requirements is required Able to work with external regulatory agencies and accreditation groups is required Up to 10% domestic travel is required Ability to complete all annual training and continued education requirements and perform all work per appropriate safety standards is required Major biotech/pharma experience is preferred. Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) or equivalent/related certification is preferred Confirmed track-record in working with large complex, international teams is preferred Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills is preferred This is an essential personnel role.
