The Data Science Analytics & Insights team within Janssen R&D develops innovative solutions in support of Janssen’s key clinical programs. We are looking for an outstanding Director to lead a team of data scientists focused on utilizing advanced analytics and algorithms to develop RWD-based solutions to enable disease insights, improve patient outcomes, and enhance clinical development. The Director and reports will combine scientific expertise with data science and technology to develop innovative approaches around early disease detection, patient risk stratification, and endpoints charecertization, development, and validation. The Director will work closely with strategic partners within Data Science, Janssen R&D, and J&J to ensure alignment and impact and collaborate with key external partners to shape, develop, and deploy cutting-edge solutions. Key Responsibilities: Define the scope and lead the development of Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning models in health and healthcare (e.g., disease identification, patient stratification, disease insights, simulations) based on RWD that will provide key insights on our pipeline assets Provide deep technical expertise to advise on algorithmic and model development, help define data and analytics strategies, and ensure validation and deployment strategies in place to turn models and solutions into actionable insights Lead and build data science projects by developing and applying creative solutions that go beyond current tools to deliver data-driven insights to high-priority scientific problems Demonstrate leadership in technical guidance to working team Manage and develop a diverse, inclusive team of experts with deep Data Science expertise Lead a team through coaching, inspiring and developing the talent Set standards of excellence for the team by demonstrating professional expertise, strong work ethic, integrity and professional behavior Attract, develop and retain pipeline of highly engaged, internal and externally sourced talent Work side by side with the TA Data Science, External Innovation, and Platform teams on defining priorities and collaboratively and pragmatically building a roadmap to ensure that Data Science methodologies and analytics are being leveraged to deliver on high value use cases Effectively navigate technology, analytical, regulatory, legal and privacy complexities to achieve objectives Actively participate in Data Science communities across Janssen and J&J and contribute to best practices, methodologies, processes, tools and standards Maintain strong relationships with external partners including academic data scientists and other key external stakeholders Participate in cross-functional collaborations with external companies and internal scientific and data science teams Develop and manage data partnerships Clearly articulate highly technical methods and results to diverse audiences and partners to drive decision-making Qualifications Required qualifications: Ph.D. with 7 years of post-graduate industry experience (or a Master’s degree with a minimum of 10 years’ experience) in a quantitative discipline (e.g., statistics, epidemiology, computer science, artificial intelligence, applied mathematics, electrical engineering, or similar) Expertise with AI/ML machine learning, quantitative methods, predictive and causal modelling and other analytics frameworks and techniques Demonstrated experience driving research using Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing and / or statistical modeling methods Demonstrated experience through publication and thought leadership that combines clinical prediction and causal inference At least 5 years of experience with relevant software and tools such as R, Java or Python, Amazon Web Services (AWS), SQL, etc. At least 3 years of experience leading, coaching, growing and motivating analytical and statistical experts in a direct-reporting or matrixed-reporting manner Experience serving as a technical leader and role model Demonstrated ability to influence in a large and matrixed organization Proven experience in prioritizing, managing, and executing on a complicated portfolio of projects Experience in drug development or pharmaceuticals environment Strong problem-solving skills with a solution-oriented, creative mindset Ability to effectively communicate technical work to a wide audience Passionate about leveraging data to drive scientific innovation Expertise in one or more therapeutic areas including oncology, immunology, neuroscience or cardiovascular Experience with RWE and observational research methods Demonstrated experience in real-world data (EHR, insurance claims, registry data) Preferred qualifications: At least 5 years of hands-on technical data analysis and modeling experience (across roles) Strong working knowledge of real-world data and healthcare relevant datasets, such as EHR, insurance claims and registry data Experience working in multiple therapeutic areas and having strong knowledge of disease biology Familiarity with and exposure to drug discovery and clinical development processes Thriving on a diverse company culture and celebrating the uniqueness of our employees, we are committed to inclusion.
