Position summary

Discovery, Product Development & Supply (DPDS) is a top priority in R&D at The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson. The Global Communication Leader, Discovery, Product Development & Supply (DPDS) serves as the lead communications counselor to the DPDS organization. This role will work to increase internal and external awareness of DPDS as a world leader in integrated discovery, product and process development and clinical supply, devising the overall communication strategy, messaging platform, and creative assets. The leader will work closely with Janssen R&D’s Global Head of DPDS and as a member of the DPDS Leadership Team, advising and counseling DPDS leaders on advancing the organization’s narrative across channels, including media releases, digital channels, internal events and more. Leading a team of communications experts supporting DPDS as well as Global Regulatory Affairs (GRA) and Global Clinical Development Organization (GDCO), the role has a unique opportunity to identify opportunities and shape how Janssen R&D Communications engages internal and external audiences across the pharma product life cycle to impact reputational and business objectives. As a member of the Janssen R&D Communications (JRDC) Leadership Team, the role leads strategic initiatives and brings a global mindset to evolve and modernize the capabilities and value that the JRDC team delivers to the organization, patients and caregivers. Major Duties/Responsibilities Devise and execute the overall external communication strategy, messaging platform and positioning for Discovery, Product Development & Supply (DPDS); significant collaboration, interaction, leadership and alignment to help drive the communication strategy and contribute to overall success of JRD and the broader Janssen business; Works as a critical team colleague as part of the broader R&D Communications team, including generating ideas and leads for new opportunities to modernize how we engage audiences internally and externally. Serves as an expert on change management communications, employee communications, public relations, media, digital engagement and other opportunities. Devise and execute internal communication strategies to inform, motivate and engage the internal workforce around the DPDS strategy As a member of the DPDS Leadership Team, provide executive communication support and strategic counsel to Global Head of DPDS; develop and guide implementation of executive leadership and engagement strategy, ensuring strong executive positioning and driving meaningful business outcomes. Serve as a key member of the JRD Communications LT, supporting initiatives that advance the future state of communications to provide JRD with strategic advantage in engaging and influencing audiences that define our success. Lead a team of communications experts supporting DPDS, Global Regulatory Affairs, and Global Clinical Development Organization, coaching and inspiring them to deliver results and develop as professionals. Rally the team to develop new and innovative ways to deliver value from communications across Janssen Research & Development and the enterprise. Serve as a media contact and crisis communications leader for DPDS and JRD Communications to both shape and protect reputation. Other Duties & Responsibilities Global perspective and successful record of working in a global function, with direct experience of leading international projects, issues, and teams Demonstrated knowledge of pharmaceutical product development, commercialization, and the pharmaceutical industry; knowledge or strong interest in digital engagement and emerging methods/technologies in communications Eagerness to learn about a quickly evolving space, strong eye for business with understanding of competitive and industry priorities that drive business and social value Proactive ownership of all aspects of communications, serving as the Global Head of DPDS’s eyes and ears with respect to communications ecosystem Ability to lead, motivate and coach project teams, external agencies, and individuals Ability to build relationships and influence partners Strong experience in developing multimedia content (particular focus on paid and social strategies), insights and analytics, audience segmentation and targeted communications Proven record in driving earned media opportunities and speaker engagements Strong written English skills and ability to draft compelling core materials for multiple audiences Proven experience with providing communications counsel and support to senior Company executives Ability to demonstrate tangible business outcomes through effective measurement and analytics Demonstrated ability of managing priorities in a fast-paced, environment Experience in managing budgets and prioritization across projects Exercise excellent judgment always Qualifications Bachelor’s degree required An advanced degree in Communications or Journalism is preferred. Minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience leading and managing communication in a company, NGO, government agency or public relations agency is required. Proven experience in Pharma R&D communication or public affairs is preffered Current or past work experience in R&D and Pharmaceutical communications is preffered Strong business acumen and demonstrated ability to build deep, authentic, successful relationships with top executives and scientists and strong influence with senior internal and external stakeholders is required. Partners closely with DPDS Leadership Team, Therapy Area Communication Leaders, other functions incl. Global Regulatory Affairs and Global Development, Corporate Functions, and regional Communication Leaders Ability to drive workforce engagement strategies to inspire and increase productivity is required. Ability to manage networks in a matrixed environment is required. Current or past experience (5+ years) with direct People Management skills is preffered Proven track record of successful, independent public relations/communications, corporate communication, science communication, product communication, public affairs, and/or media relations achievements is required. Global mindset and successful track record of working in a global function, with direct experience of leading on international projects, issues and teams, and of competent internal and external stakeholder interactions on an international basis is required. Strong business acumen, confident yet agile personality, the ability to move fast and the ability to provide strong counsel in real time is required. Working knowledge of the financial disclosure process is preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of R&D processes and the global landscape and key issues for biopharmaceutical science and innovation is required. Broad understanding of competitive and industry priorities that drive business and social value is required. Strong experience in crisis/issues management and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, global matrix environment is required. Deep understanding of traditional media, digital and social platforms and strong experience dealing with national and local lay, professional/trade and social media is required. Experience in managing budgets and resource allocation across large critical projects is required.
