    The In Vivo Models Scientist applies their scientific acumen and technical expertise to collaboratively deliver in vivo research support using established and novel methodology. The individual is expected to strive for excellence in all aspects of the profession of laboratory animal science and maintain the highest standards. The Scientist works effectively in multidisciplinary teams, is stakeholder-focused, delivering results through both individual contribution and collaboration. Strong interpersonal skills will benefit the Scientist in their active pursuit of partnerships with Therapeutic/Functional Area team members to both facilitate and enhance drug development models in a cross-disciplinary manner. The Scientist is a champion for the development of new processes and methodologies supporting alignment with global thinking and refined technique. The Scientist contributes to a continuous improvement approach to the scientific acumen of the La Jolla In Vivo Models and Research Support team members through delivery of in vivo trainings, didactic education, and leading by example. The Scientist will ensure compliance with all applicable animal welfare regulations and guidelines, the Guide for the Use and Care of Laboratory Animals and internal standards.

    In Vivo Scientist's Essential responsibilities:

    • Provide local scientific leadership and expertise for in vivo partnerships with therapeutic/functional area in vivo researcher teams across multiple scientific disciplines.

    • Serve as a local in vivo scientific expert for the Janssen discovery portfolio, leveraging strong in vivo model technical skills, data collection and analysis methodology, and communication skills.

    • Establish collaborative research projects with in vivo scientists in support of drug discovery (e.g., animal model development or refinement), including contributing to the study design, execution, and data analysis/interpretation.

    • Partner with and aid in the development of local IVS animal care & research support staff who provide scientific support to local in vivo research teams.

    • Provide in vivo pharmacology and disease model expertise, with a strong emphasis on discovery, across multiple projects within our drug discovery portfolio.

    • Interact with in vivo scientists to understand and anticipate their in vivo research needs, engaging them in a flexible and constructive manner to address matters of ethical review with a focus on 3Rs, humane endpoints, and avoidance of adverse effects.

    • Develop and execute animal welfare & 3Rs related in vivo projects, including serving as a visible champion for the 3Rs in study design and execution.

    • Author, maintain, and amend as needed animal use protocols in support of In Vivo Models activities.

    • In partnership with the local IVS Site Lead and IVS Global Head, assist in the development of the IVS Global Strategy for In Vivo Models & Scientific Collaborations for the local in-house vivarium ensuring alignment with overall departmental and organizational goals.

    • Provide scientific mentorship, professional development, guidance and leadership to junior scientists and/or postdoctoral candidates.

    • Build and maintain a strong scientific reputation by publishing novel research in peer-reviewed journals and presenting data at scientific meetings.

    • Champion compassionate pursuit of animal-based research through adherence to applicable local policies, regulations, and guidelines in all projects.
