Key Responsibilities: This will be a site-based point of contact for external CRO chemistry resources within Discovery Chemistry. The position will report to the Global Head of External Discovery Chemistry Will contribute to delivery of the Janssen small molecule discovery pipeline by ensuring projects from Hit ID to NME delivery are appropriately supported with external medicinal chemistry resources. This person will provide tactical oversight of CRO teams, in collaboration with the Global Chemistry leadership team and chemistry project team leaders, and ensure FTEs are aligned with the chemistry strategy and prioritized program resourcing needs across the discovery portfolio Partner with both internal and external medicinal chemistry teams to generate innovative solutions to synthetic and medicinal chemistry challenges Track performance and drives increased productivity of CRO partners Qualifications A PhD in synthetic organic chemistry or a related field is required A minimum of 6 years of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry, with proven track record in medicinal chemistry, and key contributions to clinical candidate selection is required At least 8 years of experience in medicinal chemistry is preferred Experience leading external CRO resources as applied to drug discovery programs in a matrixed setting with chemistry leadership and project team leaders is required Experience in the strategic assessment and alignment of CRO partners, resulting in maximized efficiency, productivity, and capabilities is preferred Expert knowledge of modern methods of synthetic and medicinal chemistry with experience developing innovative solutions is required Experience in one or more therapeutic areas/target classes is required Strong knowledge of pharmacology across therapeutic areas, DMPK principles, and non-clinical safety as applied to drug discovery is required Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaborative skills are required Deep scientific track record should be documented through inventorship, a strong publication record in peer reviewed journals, and a history of giving presentations at scientific meetings is required Experience with prioritizing competing portfolio demands and a global perspective with multiple counterparts at sites worldwide is preferred Must be able incorporate a global focus and smoothly operate in multiple cultural environments, time zones, and regions This position can be located in either San Diego, CA or Spring House, PA and may require up to approximately 10% travel At Johnson & Johnson, we’re on a mission to change the trajectory of health for humanity.
