Position summary

Janssen Research & Development (“JRD”), a Johnson & Johnson company, is recruiting for a Principal Scientist, Janssen R&D Data Science, Real-World Evidence (“RWE”). The primary location for this position is flexible – either; Titusville, NJ; Raritan, NJ; Spring House, PA; Cambridge, MA; New York City, NY; San Diego, CA; South San Francisco, CA; remote may also be considered with up to 15% travel. Janssen develops treatments that improve the health of people worldwide. Research and development areas encompass oncology, cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, immunology, pulmonary hypertension, neuroscience, and infectious disease. The Data Science Analytics & Insights team within Janssen R&D develops innovative insights and solutions leveraging a variety of different data sources across multiple disease areas. We are looking for outstanding scientists whose responsibilities include: Independently partner with the Janssen R&D Data Science Portfolio Management and Therapeutic Area teams to execute on the priorities, building a roadmap to deliver the projects from conceptualizing the research questions, data feasibility, study design and analysis to the final presentation to senior cross-functional leaders and publication Provide thought leadership for developing, adapting, and delivering Real-World Data (“RWD”) methodologies to mitigate observed and unobserved bias and confounding in the execution of comparative effectiveness analyses, time-to-event analyses, external control arm studies, hybrid control arm studies, observational and prospective study designs, the burden of disease estimation, cohort selection and characterization, incidence/prevalence studies, non-inferiority studies, and the development of algorithms for risk stratification, creating disease severity indices, etc. Lead and contribute to generating RWE or secondary evidence from post-hoc RCT analyses, observational databases, and literature reviews to support regulatory and HTA agency interactions including oral and written communications Be a hands-on technical leader among the Data Science team, instituting best practices while crafting a data-driven culture, developing, and mentoring junior members of the team. Build upon the Data Science Analytics & Insights brand by validating real-world methods and developing novel designs leading to intellectual property patents or publication Qualifications A Ph.D. degree, or master’s degree in a quantitative field (e.g., epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, health economics, biomedical informatics, computer science, artificial intelligence, or similar) Relevant experience (3+ years for Ph.D., 4+ years for a master’s) within a start-up, technology, biopharma, or healthcare industry Extensive experience with exploratory data analysis, statistical modeling, causal inference methods to mitigate observed and residual confounding (propensity score matching/ weighting, instrumental variables, state transition models, comparative effectiveness analysis Demonstrated experience with real-world data (EHR, insurance claims, registry data) Proven project leadership in complicated context, able to influence and engage the strategic and technical partners in a matrix organization Experience in generating regulatory grade evidence (HTA, single-arm studies with external controls) for submission to regulatory authorities; communicating and responding to agency reviews and comments Proven track record of consistently delivering on high impact RWD projects Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills Demonstrated experience in leading cross-functional teams and managing external vendors Ability to work in an agile matrix environment Expert proficiency in either SAS, R or Python Preferred qualifications: Familiarity with drug discovery and the clinical development process and/ or expertise in one or more therapeutic areas Experience delivering on Data Science projects using predictive technologies, forecasting, and modeling Thriving on a diverse company culture and celebrating the uniqueness of our employees, we are committed to inclusion.
